John Calvert to give a presentation at Dave Morgan’s Seminar

I’ve got big news for West Coast racers. John Calvert will present a course on leaf spring suspensions at my seminar in his shop. John and his staff are being very supportive of this event and he has also decided to cater the lunch. You can’t beat a deal like that! Two instructors for the price of o...

Re: Leaf spring rear suspensions?, tips-tricks?, 60' times??

Afco, Varishock and Penske have digressive valving available, but you need to call the factory direct.

Re: Leaf spring rear suspensions?, tips-tricks?, 60' times??

Howdy John, As expected, you must have been parked at your computer. I left the track in North Dakota and moved to New Jersey, simply because there are so many race cars here. I'm now associated with Fonse Performance which is a father/son machine shop. They have an engine dyno and chassis dyno. I'v...

Re: Front end Question?

My suggestion is to install the Trick springs then let them take a set, which they will do eventually. If the car does sit nose high after installing the trick springs, take the car on some bumpy gravel road and drive on it for a while. The bumps will wear the springs out and they will settle faster...

Re: Leaf spring rear suspensions?, tips-tricks?, 60' times??

Howdy Guys, Someone asked about spring rates in leaf springs. This is a tricky issue because the rate changes as the spring moves. A big part of this change has to do with a jacking effect that occurs at the rear shackle. As it rotates forward, it stiffens the spring and the reverse happens when to ...

Re: Qa1 shocks

If it matters, I'm running Alstons single-adjustables in the back and QA1-R single ajustables in the front. Is the part # 3128? If so, those are horrible shocks (I know, I sold a ton of them in the early eighties.) In those days, we knew very little about valving and those are, essentially, Volkswa...

Re: Anyone use Koni adjustable drag shocks

In comparing the Koni to the Strange, I'd like to advise that you'll probably get better customer service and technical support from Strange... they pay much more attention to drag racing.

Re: Before and After Dave's Morgan's Seminar

BracketNova,
Yep, you could take advantage of the lighter springs in the front to get the nose to come up faster, but the IC is fixed in your car. I'd look at a frotn spring change and a numerically-higher first gear ratio (to help keep it up.)

Yep, four-link at the rear and A-arm up front.

Before and After Dave's Morgan's Seminar

Howdy all, I realize that it's hard for people to relate to what I can do to help them so I'd like to share a couple of videos with you. These are of Glen Lakins 9.90 Nova. He attended a seminar and workshop at Street & Strip Performance in Louisville. During the workshop, we readjusted the IC (...

Moving them forward will simply mean that you may need a stiffer spring.

Re: heading to the shop

Man, I'm very happy to read that you remember the shouldered bolt issue as I caught a ton of hell by sharing that information. It's pretty shameful how some manufacturers cut costs by running the shortest bolt they can find. The goal I had for sharing that data was not to sell more aircraft hardware...

Re: Calvert Wheelie Bar?

This looks similar, in concept, to the AJE bar. In that design, the upwards motion of the wheelie-bar wheel loads against the frame and pushes the front of the car downward. The AJE bars are pretty ugly-looking, but work well. This may be a prettier version of the same idea. I wouldn't be too concer...

Re: Leaf Spring to Coilover Swap

The advice you got from S&W was fundamentally sound. You'll like this longer shock because it will allow the rear end to separate from the car more when you're swapping slicks.

Re: Front shimmy on touchdown

There are a lot of good points made here: BUMPSTEER- Toe-change during vertical wheel travel. This is pretty easy to fix, normally requiring a spacer between the outer tire rod ball joint and the steering arm, or by changing the height of the steering arm in that location (remember to cold-form it w...
