Cheap thing is to put a 440 crank in the 400 block makes a 451 and is supposed to work pretty well

Ya know I used to have a 69 Camaro (way back in the day :D ) that had ladder bars with a floater on the rear end with leaf springs. I don't remember breaking stuff with that set up. There are kits to put the Leaf spring inline with the frame, and you can tub the the car to take a 13x31 slick I believe with out touching the frame.

If you are going to street drive it a 4 link is best, ladder bars allow no housing rotation so every time you drive into a slope at an angle it is trying to twist the housing or the tubes in a Dana60 or 12 bolt, I have seen many failures of the brackets where they weld onto the rearend.
