New front end!

#1 Post by supernova » Mon Sep 15, 2008 6:54 pm

I finally put the front end together this week end with all the good parts. It took for ever. I started on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. and put everything up around 10:00 p.m.
Sunday night. It's done!

Very clean work.

Is this part of an upgrade kit ? I don't think I've ever seen a mod like that on a front clip. It really looks trick and clean. I've been looking at the front of the Camaro (same clip as the Nova I believe) and thinking about how to offset some of the weight up front - my iron head / iron block 427 is a real anchor and throw in the huffer, it's like having a load of bricks up front.

Flaming river pinto rack (Ebay 149.00), TRZ a-arms (internet 900.00), Steering arms I made $20.00, Smiley's speed shop everything else, (u-joints, rod ends, 150.00)

Used a sawsall to cut out part of the cross member. Had some plate steel and DOM tubing laying around so I went to town and by the end of the day it was done.
I still have to work out the bump steer and paint everything. In time.

Yep! $20,000 + already and I have to send about another $10,000 to $ 15,000 to finsh it
BY MARCH 09, thats even with me doing all the work!
I don't even want to know what it would've costed if I let someone else build for me!

I think I have about $1300.00 in the front end. If I would have let the local shop do it for me it was going to cost $3500.00.

Around 80 lbs.
The steering gear box has to be 30 lbs by itself.

i run the aerospace front disc brake kit, everything cost about 600-bucks if i remember right, but took a lot of weight off the front from the stock gm stuff.i guess when your at this level you need all the weight savings you can get,i know the stuff aint cheap as i'm probably going to go to lightweight a-arms over the winter but probably not a rack.

Weight or the lack of is not a problem with my car. I mean for the class that I run, says the engine size sets the weight of the car.
My 525 c.i. motor means my car has to weigh 3300 lbs. My idea of 3300 lbs is to make the car weigh as little as possible and then add weight where I want to make the 3300 lb limit.

Like nothing up front but the engine and radiator and everything else in the back. If I have to add weight I will add it under the back seat in front of the axle C/L for weight transfer.

This car should weigh 300 lbs less than the 73 nova i had and should be 200 lbs under race weight. I never had to take it out of the 73 so adding it to the 72 where I want should help transfer.

It's all about moving the weight to a better place! Thats one reason why I changed cars

3100 lbs w/driver is going to be difficult with a big block... Or are you talking without driver?
