REAR SHOCKS

#1 Post by julven » Mon Jan 09, 2006 4:36 pm

Okay i started the quest to buy a good set of rear shocks and found out that the price is double what i was thinking it would be. so i need help .i have a 72 nova with landrum rear springs and caltracs in the rear my car 60s like crap i have 50/50 shocks on it now and it does a 1.92 on the motor and a 1.78 on nitrous.the front has moroso springs and 90/10 shocks.my best qtr is 11.39@115 nitrous and a 12.52@103 on the motor.saying all this to say. is the double adj shock worth the extra money for my car? making some other upgrades so i hope to lower my time some but as you can see it needs some 60ft help.i will say that it is a little sbc 331ci so it does well on the top end. Thanks Jason

I don't know if they would work for you, but the Rancho 9000 shocks are highly recommended by Calvert, close in quality to the single adjustable QA1's I have heard but much cheaper - if memory serves me correctly they are about $78 ea. I think those would probably work pretty good till you are in the low 9's with the car in my opinion - however I have never tried them myself.

Garret put the Ranchos on the back of his Camaro with the Caltracs, he's had a best 60ft of 1.44 I believe on his way to a 10.59. I'm using the QA1's set on full stiff, with less converter than Garret and I've had a best of 1.507. The QA1's are pricey, I think a Koni street shock or the Ranchos will get the job done.

shocks

My shocks are still in the stock location. John, that is what i was wanting to know is my car to the point of needing the good high end shocks or can i get by on the Ranchos or QA1 singles. When i bought my caltracs they said to buy some Koni 90/10s for the front.I have Lakewoods on the front that are about 10 years old and i think they are done but i have another set that have very few runs on them.Should i buy a fixed shock for the front of another brand or an adjustable shock or just use the other set of Lakewood 90/10s. I also should of said as Bob was talking about converters mine was a junk off the shelf 3000 stall. M&M built me a custom one that they said would change the car queit a bit for this year. I think lunati wanted a 4000+ with my combo so i was hurting things that way. But the shock are still an issue.Thank you all for the help.Jason

My QA1 singles did a great job until I finally got the car down into the low 9's, that's when they seemed to start having problems. That's why I think the Rancho's or the single QA1's would work great for your car at this time. On the front shocks, I think the Koni SPA1 adjustable shock is a excellent shock for what you're looking for and would be a good investment.

I'm still confused how you run 12.50's w/ a 1.9x short time and only trap at 103mph... Normally w/ a weak 60' the mph would be higher than normal, and it seems that it's lower than average. :?:

Sorry i don't have an answer. I have been trying for years ever thing i could to make this thing work and have done nothing but go backwards some times. The best 60 is a 1.87 on the motor but i don't remember the mph on that run. This spring/summer i will post some time slips i hope they
change and if they don't I am sure to be the laughing stock of my little group i run with as i am already for the money i have spent and it is still two colors. Thanks Jason

Not yet.We have been working on another car trying to get it to the body shop so it is done for this season.I am going to go with the rs9000 and the spa1 as that looks like the best all around for me at this time. I will post how it all turns out.Our local track should open the first of march so I should have some info after that.Jason

Our track here opens around the same time, so I'll probably have the RS9000s on the car by then. Calvert said the part# I need for my 74 Nova is RS99124.

I just ordered one of that part from the local parts store to look at as that is what mine should take also. My cost is around 93.00. I was going to call Calvert and double check though. thanks for the info.

in our stocker we ran cheap gas shocks from pepboys int he rear, we used fiberglass springs from an early 90's astro van( had to make our own spring eye brackets to put the springs in) and cal tracs, our best 60ft was in vegas with a 1.31
