Help me pick a brake kit for my nova.

#1 Post by 434 nova » Mon Nov 24, 2008 2:37 am

I am basically looking at aerospace or a willwood system but was wondering what is the difference between them and a ebay kit that has drilled and vented rotors. My car has autofab tubular arms and qa1 coilovers, this is a street car so stoping is very key for me. Right now it is setup with 4 wheel drums but would like to have atleast the fronts disc. Car is a 69 nova has a 434 sbc, that makes 650 hp n/a and a 300 shot. This car will also be driven on the street regualry. Please tell me yor experiences with any of them and their pros and cons. Thank you

I have Aerospace front and back on mine, no complaints here. They are a drag racing setup not to sure how well they would wear/work on the street over the long term. If it's a daily driver something heavier with ventilated rotors might be a better idea.

I'll tell ya what, I ordered up a complete front & rear disc brake kit w/master cylinder from Aerospace and I couldn't be more happy, everything from the first time I called the service I recieved was excellent! Tech help is great thanks to Scott, the Aerospace stuff is definitely lighter than the Wilwood stuff too not to mention the Aerospace stuff is a bit easier on the wallet too. So my vote is for Aerospace.

I agree, Aerospace was a good choice for me. I put their discs on the back and have been very happy with them. Scott helped me out with advice and was real helpful in doing a parts swap when I ordered the wrong housing ends for my 12-bolt. When I get around to doing the front, I'll go with another set of Aerospace brakes.

I have Strange Pro race on mine and I installed them myself. Very easy to install and very nice brakes! My Vote is for STRANGE and if that is who you decide to go with then call:
Jeff Holloway (strange dealer)

Jeff is a nice guy to deal with.

If you're interested in an Aerospace kit, contact Bill Creech, he's a dealer for them - He owns / races the Lil Demon (71 Dodge Demon C/Gas ride) - contact him at billcreech@sbcglobal.net

Here's a website with pix of his ride:

I've bought all of my Aerospace stuff through him.

I have wilwood on the front of my car and the pads never seem to back fully off. They are nice brakes and stop good, there just always seems to be a very small amount of drag on the rotor.

I like the Strange brakes also , the 1 piece rotor is really a lot easier to deal with than the multi piece design. I never put Aerospace on anything but I have installed a lot of Wilwood and Baer brakes. All the kits will move your wheel out so check for any tire clearance issues.

Thanks for the advice guys but i have a couple more ?s
#1 If i go with the aerospace kit that is designed for a cars between 2600-3000 #s can i get away with it in a 3200# car that may not see no more than 20 miles at a time. I wont be driving this car all the time mostly on weekeds and to car shows.

#2 What is the main difference between that kit and a ebay kit with drilled rotors besides the aluminum calipers. Will it stop better or what ?

#3 Does anyone know what is the difference in weight between the stock drums and the aerospace brake kits, which one of them is lighter?
Thanks.

1 you should have noproblem if you go with the vented rotors i have customers that drive with them alot and put lots of miles on them with no problems

2 as for the drilled and sloted you will notice it harder to stop the drilled and sloted works if you are on the brakes hard all the time like circle track or road racing but normal driving don't waste your money unless your going for the look. i had a customer that went from no drill and sloted rotors to drilled and sloted came back a few months later and said his car didn't stop very good with the drilled and sloted i said i told you so so we reinstalled his non drilled and sloted rotors a few days later he came back and say to trash the drilled and sloted rotors lol they suck you were right lol

3. the rotor's are lighter i don't no the exact weight though

I'm trying to think about whether or not I saved weight going from drums to discs in the back - not a clue as to the delta. I don't think you'll see a lot of weight savings with Aerospace discs over rear OEM drums - I think the real weight savings would be Aerospace discs replacing OEM discs in the front. Note that I only installed rear brakes from Aerospace, their AC-505VR kit. I have not swapped the OEM front discs out yet.

The AC-505VR kit uses Pontiac/Olds housing ends, but otherwise is identical to the the other rear drag kits. If you want *lots* of whoa, you can go with dual calipers in the rear. My Camaro is prolly around 3600 lbs (or possibly more) and these brakes seem to do a great job on the street, even under panic stop conditions from high speed (ask me sometime about panic stops from high speed :smt003 )

I went with slotted / non-drilled because I was told the drilled rotors would a) not stop as well, and b) would wear pads more quickly than smooth rotors.

Hope this is of some help.
