Tapered Bolts for Steering Arms/Tie Rod Ends

#1 Post by Craig W. » Sat Mar 14, 2009 8:09 am

When using heim joints for tie-rod ends, do you need a tapered bolt to fit up in the steering arms? I believe that is the way it should be done, but I'm not finding a sources for them. Anyone got a good source where I can buy them to fit my stock Nova steering arms?

I changed how I was searching and came up with a set from Speedway Motors. Now if I can just verify that the size and taper are correct for my Nova arms.

I am not really sure what the question is, but I am pretty sure the answer is Big Block.

Craig,
If you don't mind altering your steering arm, I just drill the taper out a little oversize and press in a piece of 5/8" .058 tubing if you are using 1/2" tie rod ends.

All the advice on this question is good. David's suggestion to drill the taper out is the most common in drag racing. John's thought that oval racers will have something is also true. They (companies like Allstar) have bumpsteer kits that fit most common GM spindles.
