Too MUCH WRINKLE?
The tire shake thread got me thinking... I dont have tire shake BUT I do think I have to much wrinkle for my 1.41-1.397 60's. Am i killing my tires or risking spinning off the rims?
29x9 tire with 14psi (my tire gauge has been calibrated and upgraded gauge) No tubes. Thoughts?
In this picture the tire looks weird...?
This side dosent look to bad.....@13PSI that run

I think they look fine. I use to run that same tire but with 10.5 psi in them. if it's working leave it alone. You can use rim screws to hold the tire to the rim.

Yep, I'd certainly recommend bead lock screws. Losing pressure integrity under WOT would be a nasty surprise at speed.supernova wrote:I think they look fine. I use to run that same tire but with 10.5 psi in them. if it's working leave it alone. You can use rim screws to hold the tire to the rim.

Re: Too MUCH WRINKLE?
Your slicks might need more air dependent of track conditions, how well the chassis/suspension works and how many runs on the tires.
As to them coming off the rim, that would be a neat trick and it ain't happening!! Don't waste your time and money no mind ruin a nice pair of rims screwing them UNLESS you run tubes which you shouldn't be doing either!
I race every weekend, 36+ weekends a year, have logged over 4000 passes with slicks that have never been screwed to the rim and my slicks ain't ever come off the rim!!
Most of those passes were in my former ride that went a best of 1.28 60 foot off the footbrake weighing nearly 3900 lbs
and my new ride has gone a best of 1.20 60 foot and 1.31 60 foot with the back tires
That said, doesn't matter what type, brand or number you read on your air pressure gauge as long as you use the same gauge everytime you check/air your slicks.
If your slicks leak air from week to week either dismount them and soap the sidewalls or replace them with Hoosiers...they don't leak air period!!
Set/check the psi of your slicks before your 1st pass and don't touch them all day long.
When/if you want to try more air, go up 1/2 lb. at a time from where they are NOT from where you want them or where you think they should be.
BTW, this is the high tech tire pressure gauge that I've been using for nearly 20 years and over 4000 passes...
less than $10 bucks!

I'm certain the gentleman has much more experience on the track than I do, but it still comes down to a matter of personal choice, whether you bead lock or not. I've seen guys spin the bead on mounted slicks and have problems.

turning ther tire on the rim and spinning it off the rim are two very different things!

Re: Too MUCH WRINKLE?
No, you're not killing the tire. If it gets to the point where the rim looks like it's gonna hit the ground, then you might want to start worrying and consider a stiffer sidewall tire, wider rim, etc..
You can mark the rim and tire to see if it's turning any. If you start to see little slivers of rubber coming out between the rim and tire, that's also a good sign they've been turning on the rim. At that point you might want to either start gluing them with High-tack or go ahead and use screws.

Thanks for the help guys. I may experiment by adding some air. Thanks!

No they worked perfectly! The best 60' the car ever had and never damaged the tire. I guess you don't kknow everything.

Re: Too MUCH WRINKLE?
What I know is a whole lot more than you and without question a 29" x 9" slick run at 10.5 psi on a 3300 lb. ride is way underinflated!
Nuff said!
The fix for slicks tuning on the rim is to have them mounted correctly and properly inflated.
The local tire shop don't know how to mount slicks and the majority of the street/strip, test/tune crowd run too little air in their slicks.
When the tires are mounted on wheels that the bead of the rim and tire have been cleaned leaving no residue and the tire mounted DRY, the slicks migh move a few inches in total on the first ~ half dozen passes after which they'll take set and won't move again but what they won't do on is spin off the rim!!
You're debating your .02 meanwhile we're at least 5 months into the '09 and you haven't made 1 pass yet while I've been out racing in competition since March just like every season for the past 18 years!supernova wrote:Posted: Fri Jul 03, 2009 2:11 pm I'm not looking foreward to the first trip to the track with my car. no need to bow just read and you'll LEARN something!
I don't need to see your car to KNOW WITHOUT question that the slick being discussed on your car with the combo/power that was turning the tire was underinflated!
Meanwhile, when you've made 25% of the number of passes that I have and 60 foot quicker, let me know!

Ed - you're not playing nice. Please keep in mind that your way is not the only way to get down the track not to mention it doesn't always apply for all cars.
