I am new here and building my first race only car.

#1 Post by 65 Comet » Wed Aug 26, 2009 10:37 pm

Hi, my name is Mitch.

My son Rob and I are currently converting a 65 Comet 202 into a race car.
This our first race only car and so far we have cut out the rear sub frame and narrowed it 7", and cut out all of the cancer.
We plan to make mini tubs by welding 4" strips of 20ga back in around the wheel wells to fill the cut out parts.
We are ready to start welding in new metal and add the CE ladder bar kit.

Any tips or advice is welcome.

Thanks,
Mitch

I wold weld the stock frame back in, you are really limiteing yourself in any classes you can run in. Most of the classes now are S/S type classes, If its backhalfed better be in the 7's and you can run some outlaw classes

Around here in the Wichita Kansas area there are only 3 basic classes anyway.
Electronics 8.49 and faster 1/8 mile
Foot Brake no electronics no ET break 1/4 mile
Sportsman 11.00 and slower foot brake only 1/4 mile.

We are going to weld the stock subframe back in only we have cut 7 inches out of the center. We aren't looking to fit into any certain class. This is just going to be a weekend bracket racer. We are building a 347 with a 150 shot kit and a C4 auto with a narrowed 9" with a 4.11 gear so we figure we will run in the 10s.

I used to run my 68 fastback but it was a street car and I sold it a couple of years ago anyway. This is our first race car.
