Need help with new toy

#1 Post by bottlesempty » Mon Feb 15, 2010 8:34 pm

As some of you know from my previous posts I was paralyzed shortly after finding this site. When I first started posting it was particularly in the suspension forum. While rehabilitating my wife procured me a copy of Dave Morgans Chassis book, Doorslammers. I was so interested and enthused about being proficient in chassis and suspension set up I'm currently pursuing the possibility of entering the Rutgers University Mechanical Engineering program.
Now that I'm in a wheelchair, my 1980 Malibu 2 door is no longer viable as my Saturday night special because my wheelchair won't go in the trunk.
Honestly I consulted this site because I remember seing many members had leaf spring equipped Novas. My first dilema is I'm feeling a S-10 or S10 Blazer, may be the best choice for me to resolve my wheelchair issue. I've noticed that many Blazers seem to hook hard, Does the Blazer have a favorable Front/rear weight bias and since I can only drsteer with one hand I'm focused on a chassis that will hook and go straight. I've noticed many newer body styles S10's at the track are extended cabs. Does the longer wheel base ext cab have any benefits on the dragstrip or stoplight? Any particular brand of traction device, caltrac vs. slida link do you recommend for an S10? My previous experience had been with Gbodies and Ford fox bodies, both with factory four links. Where I live 2wd Blazers are very rare, is it worth the hassle of chasing down a Blazer or is an S10 pickup just the same on the dragstrip? While in the hospital I daydreamed about some of the Novas I saw on this site like it was automotive porn.. lol :smt005

I think the new'er s-10 with a SB and nitrous is the way to go. What I've seen out of the blazer's is violent wheel stands.

Cal-tracs........

My two cents......

honestly thankyou for the response because thats what isaw wheel stands but maybethe S10going straight down track rather than a blazer going straight up may get better eET definitely should be more consistent with out putting it on thebumper beside the trouble of finding a clean 2wd blazer putting a fuelcell in a S1o pickup doesnt comewith the same safety issues as putting a cell in passenger compartment likein a blazer your one response has pobably saved methe trouble of shipping a blazer because 2wdS10s are a dime adozen but for some reason most blazers are4x4thanks Ilike your idea of engine choice I already have a fresh400 SBCwith Eagle all forged rotating assembly11.25 compression custom ground .630lift solid rollercam brodix track 1heads setup for 200 shot of juiceu thinkit could beatrun with a honda civic lol once again I appreciate all responses Im just thankful for having the type of lady thatwill be supportive of my goalsnever once complained about money Ispent on car infact shegot aSummit racing credit card in her name soIcould get parts

I've seen a number of S10's work really good, no reason why one of those can't be made to work.

s10's are the way to go, here is one I tubbed for a guy and still used the factory leaf spring set up with the 21.5 mickies. with a set of caltracs this s10 will hook big time with slicks., it could have been made with any suspension package but he wanted to drive it on the street and keep the cost down. the extended cab would give you more cab room and it would move the drivers weight rearward to help transfer weight. the longer wheelbase would also make it more stable. but the regular cab would be just fine.

I'm feeling bad for you if all you did was day dream about Nova's.....now if it were Camaro's, I'd say your in much better shape....

Anyhow, I don't know where your located, but if you wanted to, I could connect you with a friend from S&W Racecars if you had any questions concerning any type of suspension or rollcage mods that you may need to make getting in and out of your vehicle easier. They do sell a pre-welded frame kit for the S-10 pickup that you might be interested in if you would decide to go with that vehicle.

I hate to say this, because I am a Camaro fan, but I've always thought about building a S-10 and seeing the pictures that tigwelder posted makes me wish for one even harder.

Nice job tigwelder on that truck.
