Leaf Spring Questions

#1 Post by BigTiny540 » Tue Jan 03, 2006 4:58 pm

I'm putting together a 10.5 (non W) Camaro. The rear suspension will consist of a 9" Ford with Caltracs and double adjustable QA1's mounted inboard. Can anyone tell me what's the best mono leaf spring package for the Caltracs? I'm not sure of the car's weight as it's not finished but I'd like to think we can get it into the 3300 - 3400# range. It's a BBC on spray.

Most are using the Calvert Split Mono's right now. I don't know of anything any better. I would suggest either Strange or Afco for the rear shocks instead of the QA1's though. I'm not a big fan of the valving on the QA1's for the rear.

I just bought what calvert had and recommended. Told him the combo and how much lower I wanted the car than stock. I actually wanted to lower the car another inch and bought a second set that he sold me really cheap. They are actually a split leaf mono, meaning two halves bolted together in the middle and I used the stock mono leaf perches with no rubber insulator. Couldn't tell ya what the rate is, but I think some of the other guys on here know what the rates are and where they are actually made(landrum?) if you wanted to cut out the middle man.

SPRINGS

I have Caltracs on a 72 nova and Calvert told me to run his 200 lbs split mono or a Landrum 200 lbs mono. I found a new set of 200 lbs landrum monos at a swapmeet for half price so that is what i got. I can't tell you how good they work because i put every thing on at once and my shocks are junk.

I'm running 175 lb/in. Calvert split mono-leaf with my Caltracs. I'm very pleased with them.

How do the Calvert/Landrum monos perform compared to my stock GM multileafs? I would think they are much lighter too?

I can't remember exactly how much weight the Calvert springs saved me, but it was a good bit. I'm thinking about 30 lbs total, but I don't recall for sure.

I like my springs. I think they are better than stock. You may not see a huge improvement right off, but I think once the entire suspension is dialed-in, they are better.

I am curious as to the difference between Cal Tracs and Slide-a-Links? Do they even compare?
