Setting engine back in the chassis

#1 Post by JSutphin » Wed Oct 27, 2010 5:00 pm

Im installing a 302 in a 240sx with motor plates and Im looking for facts, advice and opinions on setting the engine back in the chassis. Im wondering if it is worth the work to modify the firewall to set the engine back 3 to 5 inches, maybe more.
This question came up when looking at the clearance for the oil pan in regards to the cross-member and steering rack.
I'm using a 5.0 H.O. which uses a rear sump oil pan because in a fox body Mustang , the steering rack sits on the front of the k member. Well, the 240sx has the rack on the rear of the k member. After some measurements Ive come up with a few options Id be willing to do....

A- use a front sump pan from an older 302/289 and have the engine pretty well centered in the engine bay with no modifications to the firewall
or
B- use the rear sump pan and set the engine back the 3-5 inches and pretty much "notching' the firewall, because I was planning on retaining the stock pedals, master cylinder, steering column and whatever else I'm forgetting.

This is a drag only car, so there doesn't have to be any consideration for the wiper assembly or anything else that would be mounted near or on the firewall. Mainly worried about functionality and safety.

Lets hear your thoughts,

Joe

Depends on your racing application. Some class racing does not allow firewall mods...

If its just a bracket car I would switch the pan.

The motor in our car is setback 9.5 inches, we made our own firewall. I think it helps us out, we are moving alot of weight on some pretty small tires and alot of power, and our weight distribution is about 51/49 front to back. The only problem now is on a great track the front end wants to stay up for what seems like forever.

Nostalgia car.
