I still think your making it more complicated than it has to be. The simlpest way usually is the best way.
My new Morrison ladder bars have the adjuster on the bottom bar.

They moved them to the bottom for easy're ajustment. My bars are older, new but older. I've had them for years.

I am *way* happy with these new bars - I even put an adjuster in my locator bar. Now I can do whatever I need to without breaking links, etc. Should be cool...
