I know people who use the thin steel plate without any mods to the converter.

with the thicker plate, I suspect that you have to lengthen the converter snout

Usually on new builds where the converter hasn't been purchased yet.

I had a steel midplate, told my chassis guy to install an aluminum plate after he set the car up to use the thinner steel so, it threw the spacing off. Once I got the car home, I decided I want to eliminate the spacers needed for using the thicker aluminum midplate. Plus, instead of building engine travel limiters, I engineered some bracing into the steel midplate to eliminate the forward/aft flex associated with with using dual engine plates and there was no need to install the traditional engine travel limiters. The steel plate I used was the TCI with the integral flexplate shield. This plate is thicker and stiffer than the traditional steel midplates generally offered. The braces were made from 1/2" leg angle iron and welded onto the midplate on three locations each side. Two on engine side, one on transmission side. Very stiff now.
