Engine ideas for classic towing rig

#1 Post by marks1972 » Wed May 16, 2007 12:30 pm

Just throwing this out there for some ideas. I have a 66 GMC 3/4 ton pickup that I restored/modified, would like to use it as a tow vehicle for taking my Nova to the track. I built up a 700r4 trans for towing, swapped in disc brakes and a 14 bolt with 3:73's from a 77 3/4 ton. It has a mild 327 right now, I'm thinking about maybe a 383 or newer truck motor or any other ideas to kind of get the best compromise of power/mileage.

Thanks

That would be nice! Don't know how spendy it would be though or interior noise, these old trucks are kind of like a tin can inside.

That doesnt sound like a bad way to go, would have power to spare.

Ls engines are really popular swaps these days and a lot cheaper and easier to install than the deisel. Not as much power though.

what kind of power would something like that make with a mild build up geared toward that purpose of towing/hauling?

Thanks

A Z28 LS1 is 350hp and 365ftlbs with some mild mods I would think 400+ft lbs should be no problem.
