Is there any particular "best brand" of rattle can primer that is ok to use if you're going to paint over it later with regular automotive paint? I've got a few areas that I'd like to primer, but don't want the body shop guy to have to sand all the way back down getting the rattle can primer off.

Over bare metal? or on top of filler/old paint? If bare metal use etch primer from Dupont or SEM if not bare metal Dupont has Quick Prime. Those are the brands we use.

Hey John,

Maybe someone can back this up, but when I worked in a body shop I was always told to stay away from using rattle cans because they have silicone in them and when you go to apply a automotive finish over top of them, they don't agree with each other.

Maybe times have changed but that is what I was told, I am old you know?

But if your using rattle can primer with rattle can paint, I've used Rustoleum Automotive primer in a can with good success.

This is for an area that's going to get painted body color, it's not very visible, but just wanting to make sure if I use something there the paint will stick to it ok.

My car had a ton of rustoluem rattle can rusty metal primer on it when I bought it, I don't know how much of it the guy that painted it took off - maybe he sanded it all off? But it hasn't been a problem on the 1st paint job.

i would look for etching prime as stated more for the rust pervention as for painting over not a big deal they will primer over it with a etching priming that will stick to about anything
