How much timing??

#1 Post by 79 Camaro » Fri Sep 08, 2006 1:14 pm

Hey guys,

I am running a 496BBC 10.5 to 1 naturally aspirated for now. I have the timing set at 36*. I am trying to go faster with what I have now and was wondering if bumping some more timing in it would help some. If so, How much. I just bought a set of NGK R5671A-7 plugs that I am going to try. I have been running a regular(not V-Power)NGK BP6ES Plug.

If you need more info then let me know

Thanks
Adam

Keep putting timing in it 1 degree at a time and see if the mph picks up. Check the plugs between runs, you might also need to add some higher octane fuel for the increase in timing and possibly some main jet. Its kinda trial and error, every motor is different. 36 degrees would be atleast be my starting point.

I run mine locked at 38* in my pump gas 505, using the -7 plugs also, gapped at .035. I had backed my timing off to 35* to make it easier on the starter, 60fts dropped .02 then swapped to a gear reduction starter, bumped the timing back up to 38* and the 60fts picked back up. I havent tried to put any more timing in it yet. I just ran a new best last Saturday, granted it was only .001 in 60ft and .01 the rest of the way, but hey...I still have fall air to look forward too :)

.001 and .01 faster is way better than .001 and .01 slower!!!!!!!! Its good to see improvements no matter how small.
