I don´t realy. My friend has heard this from Pete at New York speed & marine. hwo is building a 454 SB2 for him. And my friend(Hannibal) spoke with him about my idear of getting a 582 short deck.
And you are the only one so far i have been abel to find hwo had a problem with one. But i havent found anybody that has been beating on one yet.
I just love the idea of big inch and a stick shift  (I have already namede my Chevelle Radiacal Rat  )

Shafiroff short block

#50 Post by dennisracing » Wed May 14, 2008 3:41 pm

I wish I had read these post before I had used Shafiroff...
I bought a Sportsman 540 Short block in Mar. , used my heads, bought a new oil pump pan and valve train components.. got it running a few weeks ago. 14 1/8 mile passes, and spun #1rod bearing... ran metal thru all the bearings, #1 piston hit the head, bent the exhaust valve ,all the pistons have nicks on the skirts from the metal.. SICK
I too talked to Vinny, and was told to send it back to be so called diagnosed
well i'm in Texas.. I work at a Chevy dealership, and would cost roughly 900 dollars to ship.. No..
I shipped the #1 and 2 rods, and crank back to them, with all the bearings.. I too heard the " good will " word..
I probably shouldn't have used the Eagle rods and crank, but I did.
I talked to several reputable engine builders here locally, as well as Reher Morrison.. and was told they've had problems with the eagle rods and cranks being undersized often, and had to be honed out of the box..I'm sure this is the case where they just put the #1 rod on with out checking it, and now I have junk..
I hope they step up to the plate here..
I don't know if i'd recommend them after this...

Ive also heard from 4 different builders the same thing about Eagle stuff. They all use Scat parts when on the same type of budget.

I really didn't know, my Dad has eagle rods in his super gas car, and does fine...
Shafiroff kinda acts like its my fault...They should recieve my broke parts Friday...I'm sweating it...We'll see what happens

Email them a link to this website for them to see. It helped me a lot in dealing with them. They also though that I had caused my problems! Good luck on getting compensation on this. I was sweating it also but all is good with my 582 now and it has Eagle parts in it. :-)

I appreciate the responses...I'm sick... I was all proud..The thing ran pretty good.. only 14 1/8 mile passes. It was gradually slowing down from the start, so it was eating itself up from the first time I started it..
We run 1/8 mile here in Texas, I have a 3000 lb. nova, and it ran high 5.70's.. picked the wheels up 3ft and carried them out a good ways.., just didn't last...
Canadian guy.. Did you come out alright after your dealings with them..?

No I did not get what I wanted (and what I think I deserved) but at least I got something (parts I ended up selling to get some money). I wanted to talk directly to Scott S. about it but Vinny was dealing with it. I was asking for $1K and got a 6AL and coil instead which I sold for $200 as I already have them on my car. He was really mad that he had to give me anything but this thread convinced him it was the best/right thing to do. I would still recommend them as would you I'm sure IF they fix your problem. :-)

Well, I just want my motor running...I'm fixing it myself, I just want a new crank,( the one that came in the shortblock would have to be turned Maybe 20 thousandths to fix ) the 2 rods and pistons, and all the bearings... I don't think thats too much to ask for...I told them I wanted a strong reliable motor, when I purchased it.. I upgraded to L19 rod bolt, and the valley screen kit.... and did everything I was supposed to do...
I built my last motor, which made 700 hp, and it had 200 runs , and still running when I pulled it out.. just wanted bigger, so Im not an idiot.. I know what i'm doing.. They just made a mistake..

It's disappointing to hear people are having problems with stuff from Shafiroff. I hope SSRE does right by you guys. I bought a 540 sportsman from them in 2002. It had eagle rods but upgraded Callies crank. We beat the dog crap out of that motor for 6 years on the street and the track. It carried our 3600lb Nova to an 8.89 on the bottle. It was the most reliable engine I ever owned and we never even had the heads off it. According to the SSRE dyno sheet it made 832hp and when we dyno'ed it in February of this year, it still made 823hp. I wonder if SSRE just got too big and turned into a "motor mill"???? Sounds like I made the right choice by not going with SSRE for my new motor......

Yea, I was up at PKRE yesterday to see my bullet. PK does some trick stuff. I'm so excited for my new piece to get finished. Paul's customer service and local track support is second to none. Your name actually came up yesterday when we were talking bad a$$ stock suspended Nova's. 8-)
