LT1 Air pump used as vacume pump???

#1 Post by superbdecals » Mon Jan 07, 2008 8:39 am

Ok I was told I could use one of the older Electric LT1-LS1 air pump as a vacume pump on my Chevelle.

I know that people used to use these on the Mustangs a while back and I happen to have one laying in my garage lol.

I just wanted to get some feedback on if anyone has used one for this and how you did it.

Do you wire it backwards or swap the hoses around so its sucking rather than pumping.

And last how did it work?? Did it get the job done well or was it waist of time???

I dont have the $$ to purchase the Moroso or any of the other ones out there that cost 500$ or more, and am looking for a cheap way to do evac the engine.

Thanks for your info in advance :)

I tried to replace a belt driven smog pump with the GM electric one after my new intake interfered with my original mount. It didn't do the job for me.

I don't think those offer enough air flow to create much vacuum, and they don't tolerate oil well from what I've been told.

FUnny you guys dont like them and 4 people on Yellow Bullet said they worked well but to just make sure there mounted high enough to keep the oil out of it. :/

They do only pull 4" of vacum but Im not looking to make the rings seal from this just get the gas's out of the crank case better. Ill upgrade when I have the $$ this unit is FREE so Ill probly give it try.

Thanks

A friend of mine is using a late model electric vacuum pump off a Cadillac on a blown Pontiac motor. It seems to get the job done, but they dont last long if you let them run all the time. I dont think they are meant to run full time.

I read a post that said they'll burn up if used constantly.

I wonder how this would work if you used 2 of them, one on each side? I'd probably only use them when I have to run mufflers.
