408 or 427?

#1 Post by fishun83 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 10:16 am

Ok so I have a stock 351w, minus an edelbrock 650 and edelbrock intake. I have been going back and forth for a week or so about taking that 351w and stroking it out to a 408 or 427. I have talked with local shops and did tons of research but it's so up and down about both. Figured I would ask you guys what your take on it is. I am intend to use the 351w on the strip only. Help out?

I don't know much about Ford combinations, but there is an engine builder on this site that built a 434 for a customer and I know it's turning some very respectable times.

I know instead of using the stock block, he replaced it with a Dart block, but then again, I guess it all depends on how fast you plan to go. The motor I'm talking about run's 9.1 @ 150mph on motor and he plans to spray it with a 300 shot.

The stroker kit was made by Probe.

This is all in a 93 Mustang.

If you want some help, get in touch with Keith (K-Star Automotive) on this site or see his link in my signature.

x2 we are building a 447 for a customer right now. It should run really good. Look at AFR for cylinder heads they have some killer ford stuff out.

I am a ford guy myself, my wife runs a dragster, but i am ford blue threw and true. I built a 472ci and put it in my mustang which with me in it was 2800 pounds and it ran 5.70 at 121-122 mph with a 1.28-1.29 60 foot. I also have a 572 as well.

Well see the thing is... I am sitting with two 351w blocks as of now. I want to get the most out of them as possible while I am building up a new block. Believe me I plan on going as big as I possibly can. But for now....I guess the question would be....what can I get to get the most out of my 351w?

One of the cars at our shop has a 418" and one has a 427" based windsor. I dont know the bore/stroke combo but I know they do not have stock ford blocks . Ill try to get some more info on them.

I have a 393 and a 408 . The 393 has better parts and makes more power.
If the 408 had the heads a cam off the 393 it would be better.

The stock 351 blocks are just OK. The 302 blocks will split down the middle when you start making alot of power.

The 460 stock block will split down the middle too when you get about 650-700hp. The windsor stock blocks i would not go above the 408. I know people that have and run it for a few years and thats it, but if you stay 408 and below it will last much longer. I have a short block windsor all eagle and je i would consider for sale, but its just a 351 30 over dome je, comp custom grind cam, eagle rotating assembly, and molly rings. I have a set of victor jr heads that have been cnc along with the super victor intaketo match that http://www.moderncylinderhead.com did and they flow 330 cfm on the intake.

I like the comments on the chevy power. Keep them coming once you chevy guys really feel what true horsepower is you will get rid of those chevy toys that are for boys and start looking for some ford stuff and come out and run with the men.

Where's Bowtiestang when you need him?

He seen the light when he put a Chevy under the hood of that Mustang......

Not saying that Fords aren't bad... just saying Chevy's are better.... :thumb:

Whatever you decide, good luck with your build, but like mentioned, there's no substitute for cubic inches,
and there is no substitue for a good engine builder that knows his stuff.
