#1 Post by bottlesempty » Tue Mar 16, 2010 10:45 pm

originally I had aholley 3310 750 CFMvacuum secondarycarb on my solidroller406 SBCin my1980 malibu10.5" outlaw racer joe newsham loaned me a 850cfm demon double pumperwith no choke tower the car picked up.7 in the1/4 I've found a4781 holley 850 dpwith choke tower I was told that for years the 4781 was the standard for 850 dp carb will the holley850 with choke tower kill performance in comparison to demon w/o choke tower? was told that 4781 should deliver equal powerto bGspeed demon carb any thoughts?????

Im sure its better than the 0-3310 but not as good as the demon.A good carb guy can mill the air horn off or you can get a different main body.

First I want to say that I have not done a bunch of A-B testing. I have remove the choke tower on maybe 5 or 6 carbs that were on runnig engines. I personally have not seen an increase in performance. These were 400 hp ish street/strip engines. On your combo it might make a change, but I wouldn't count on it. There are a few things that need tweeked if you remove the choke horn to make the carb work 100%.

IMO run it the way it is and see how it works for you.

If your carefull you can take the horn off yourself with a hacksaw if you are carefull. Stop short when cutting and file the rest down. My carb guy wanted $70 to mill it off, so I did it myself. He thought I used a mill to take it off :) But as mentioned above, your carb really should be calibrated afterwards since the air flow will be different (I believe?).

I taped around the choke horn (sorry no pics of that) as a guide to saw along. Use tape to cover the air bleeds too.

As far as "true gains"...can say, but if you go to do it, no big deal. I did the same as Spaz. Hacksaw & some grinding with a coarse cutter bit & sandpaper rolls.
