How Much Should This Cost?

#1 Post by ProStreetLuvr422 » Tue Oct 19, 2010 1:40 pm

After my conversations with a few of you fine folks and searches on the internet I now realize a Blower motor whether BBC or SBC is fiscally prohibitive at this time.

The 502 BBC is said to be able to make 1000+ HP and still hold together well as well as providing a foundation for a trully large & powerfull Street/Strip motor.

A 4.5 inch bore with a 4 inch crank is a 509, if you replace the 4 inch crank with a 4.25 incher you now have 540 CID, a 4.375 crank with the afforementioned bore is a 557.

Would it be possible for me with help to assemble a 670-750 HP E-85 557 CID engine from parts for around $6-9,000?

Probably not going to build a new engine for that cost, you might be able to buy used stuff and get there. If you're only wanting 650-700 hp, I'd suggest looking at building a OEM block 496 to 505, which can make that kind of power without getting too crazy on cost. If you spend time locating good used parts, build it yourself, etc. you can probably be within that price range.

FYI - a store bought 540 that makes 650 hp runs about 11,000 to 14,000 depending on components, etc. ball park pricing.

I'd have to go with John with this one. I have about $12,000 in a stock block motor that makes 800+nitrous HP (1050hp). That was with me doing all the work but machine work, turn key. To buy a motor that is the same HP would cost $2,000-$3,000 more at least and that's not a nitrous motor.

Good motor parts ain't cheap and cheap motor parts ain't good.........

The classifieds here and racingjunk are your biggest friends when your on a budget :) Especially this time of year. I would think you could build a 468 rather cost effectively and still acheive 700 hp.

Yeah, what Super said. I got just under 12,000 in my 496. (and he is gonna be about 2 sec. quicker than me) :pissed:

You could probably get a 502/509 to 1000 hp but it aint gonna on pump gas without a blower or nitrous. Now, if your careful for 7000 you can build some pretty serious beef out of a Gen. IV big chevy motor.

If 6-9k is your budget dont worry about cubic inch try to copy a proven combo thats make the hp your looking for. 700 hp is pretty easy with 49u in like John said and bbc parts are all over the place for sale.

I have a 498 CI short block for $2350 - 316-761-7208 or kbhemi@cox.net

Motor has all the best parts and with so little use it is and looks like new! Short Block has a Whopping 498 HUGE cubic inches - with Eagle STEEL crank with 4.250 stroke , internally balanced, Eagle H Beam rods 6.385 (+.250), JE SRP small dome forged pistons, BBC std deck 454 block with arp studded mains bored 4.320. This is a super Pro street Motor - depending on your heads compression ratio is around 10.3. NOW if you ever wanted a BIG pump gas motor OR something you can hang a blower on - or turbo - this is it. Its assembled and ready to go with new Mellings HV oil pump - no oil pan, cam or lifters - but I can easily handle installation of anything - mild to wild - $2350 for 498 CI of BBC

I have a 496ci that i designed and it made 740hp on the motor with 10 to 1 compression and aluminum GM heads> I HAD NO WHERE NEAR 12,000 OR EVEN 10,000 FOR THAT MATTER! You just have to do your research and spend wisely!! My Motor is also nitrous friendly as well so i dont think i am having any problem making 1000hp with it on the spray.
