408 sbc,, 12 to 1 cr, comp cam xr292,dart pro one 230 heads,, crank trigger and locked timing, digital 7 box, looking for timing ballpark numbers. thinking 36-38 total.. does that seem a good place to start

What kind of fuel? 34*-38* should be a good place to start on race gas.

I would pay close attention when using the pump fuel you should probably retard your total timing a bit for the street.

Hard to say, 12:1 is not easy to run on pump gas unless the engine was designed for it. Piston & chamber shape play a big part in keeping it from detonating among other factors but with 98 octane yoy might be ok.Just a guess I would try 30-32*. retarding timing a lot will make it run hot also.
