Powerglide for Ford

#1 Post by 72Torino460 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 10:08 pm

I've got a C6 auto behind my 460 bbf but I don't think its able to handle the hp I'm going to be throwing at it. a racing buddy of mine mentioned sticking a powerglide behind it. does anyone have any info on this kind of application?

My coworker has a 93 Mustang w/ a 434 sbf pushing around 1000hp and his C4 kept burning up clutches left and right so he decided and was also told to go with a P/G.

He ordered a J&W bell housing (JPT-92454), cut the factory P/G housing off and bolted it to the P/G, then he had to get a new flywheel and a crankshaft adapter sleeve (cost around $25).

Of course you will have to get a new shifter and he made his own tranny crossmember out of some 1" moly tubing.

You'll probably need a new driveshaft as well.

If you have any questions, let me know and I'll ask him.

Thanks a bunch. But do you know where he got his powerglide and if he got it with any specific parts to handle the hp?

Here's what I do know, they replaced the stock input shaft with a 300M, turbo spline input shaft, a Transmission Specialties trans brake and rebuild kit and I'm pretty sure it has the 1.76 gears.

P/G's came from the factory with two gear sets, 1.76 and 1.80. If you can find one with a 1.76, those are the stronger of the two sets.

He got the P/G off of his friend that builds them and he happen to have a few lying around.

I think he said to do this conversion it cost him a total of close to $3000.00

A very good book to have one hand is the Powerglide Transmission book written by Carl Munroe. It shows you all the tricks on how to rebuild one. It cost under $20.

Here's a good guy to get transmission parts from: http://www.oldanimotorsports.20megsfree.com/

His name is Steve Oldani and he is very smart when it comes to transmissions.

I'd suggest that you consider an aftermarket planetary set with a good input shaft for a PowerGlide in a heavy, high horsepower car. You might as well do it right the first time. It's cheaper than fixing everything you break and doing it right later. Good luck.

One other thing, if your going to be pushing high HP like you stated, don't skimp on the converter. Like HPDrifter said better to do it right the first time, so go to a good company like Trans Specialties, Chance Racing, PTC, etc and stay away from those no-name knock offs.
