Pig or not

#1 Post by 62belair » Thu Apr 11, 2013 1:27 pm

Hi, my name is John Troxell, I'm new to the V8 seen. I just moved to Tennessee from Long Beach Ca, where I used to race a 9 sec p/m turbo 62 bug named QuickDraw. Well I sold the car and just picked up an almost finished 62 "Pro Street"/ back halfed ladderbar Bel Air. The car has a 12 bolt rr, with 4.56 gears, powerglide with tci manual shift valve body and a 4500 stall converter. From what the previous owner told me ( car needs to be wired so I havent fired the motor yet) the motor is out of a 700ish hp alki dragster that had a 780 solid roller but after freshened up now has a 653 lift comp cam, solid roller, 1.7 rockers, brodix bb2 heads holly 950 4150 race carb (not alki) and 13.1 to 1 comp. wiseco pistons eagle crank and rods 6.385. on a 30x19.5 M/T Sportsman street/strip wrinklle wall tire. Car supposed to weigh between 2800 and 3000? I guess Ill try some c12 or Q16 in it, but my question is is this car gonna be a pig or will it put me in the hi 9's at the tracK??? Like I said, this is my first V8, i can build you a 562hp type 1 turbo motor but.....Any help or wisdome is greatly apriciated, im not too old for school. Thanks............THink the motor has around 600HP in it???

As light as it is, sounds like it ought to run what you're hoping for I would think. What size is the engine?

Yeah I agree with John and was also wondering about the CID. I think at least low 10's depending on how the combination works.

A Transbrake is a modified transmission valve body with an electric solenoid that allows you to lock 1st & reverse in at the same time when you apply power to it, locking the transmission in place. When you let go the button it releases the valve and launches the car. It's a harder launch than foot braking the car, and yeah, typically they are nice to have.

There are two types of Transbrakes, a Pro Tree brake - which is the faster reacting one. For that one you have to apply the brake to back up, and a Sportsman brake which reverse still works normally but is a slower reacting brake.

Unless you're bracket racing in No/Electronics, they don't typically allow them in that class.

4500 stall sounds fine to start with, try it and see how it works.

i talked to the guy at comp cams and he said that the cam is too small, that it is meant for something with only 10.5 to 1 comp, not 13.1 to 1 what would the draw back be in having more compression???

Do you know what the specs are on the cam? How much cranking compression does it have?

I have a friend with a 67 GTO 468ci, 13:1, NA, 3200#s, runs 9.70s. So yours should too, weighs less.
His cam has more duration with similar lift. I think I would try the cam that is in it first.

Are you coming out to Pomona May 16th -19th for the NMCA race?

BTW John, a good friend of mine is putting together a late 60's Turbo bug and may need to pick your brain sometime.
He got the engine/turbo out of a running sandrail, not sure on the details, but it's suppose to make 400+HP.
He has had a transaxle built for the extra power but again I'm not sure on details.
We have talked about the clutch (I'll assume you ran a clutch in your 62) and I know what works with V8 power but have no clue what he needs.

Can't wait to see your BelAir, I had one back in the day.
