Well something's off, sure doesn't sound like the camshaft. I'm afraid you're likely going to have to do some more digging here vs assuming that stuff is still ok. If the ignition is weak, closing that plug gap up will help some, you might at least give that a shot.

Certainly wouldn't hurt to run the valves make sure that's ok, do a compression check make sure all the holes are even, etc. Pull cap off and look, etc. etc.

I did replace the coil to be safe. I checked the plugs they looked great but E85 dont foul like gas does. I ordered a cap and rotor. I did a presure check and it was low. 135 low to 155 high. That might mean that the cam is retarted. I did think about my presure regulator that I put on. Seems that all three ports are in a open hole . I would think if the return hose comes from the same as the feeds how could it keep fuel presure? I mean going to two outlets to the carb then back to the tank seems it wouldnt keep up fuel presure.

After seeing the compression low and nothing else I could see I pulled the engine and now Im putting togather my 496. Got the short block togather now I have to decide on what Cam to run, I have 4 and not sure which to run, I dont want to have to buy another if I dont have too. Here is what I have,
264/269@50 714/700 bullet regrind
276/284@50 748/714 comp cam
276/284@50 731/731 Bullet
280/284@50 722/722 Lunati.
Any thoughts and what cam to run?
Thanks

I used to run a Crane (Shaffroff #3264) 737 int. 726 exh. w/ 274 and 284 duration at .050 in my old 505. I think that was a pretty decent cam.

I used the bullet, 276/284@ 50, 731/731, about the same cam you had listed. I got it running last night sounds good if anything. I have been fighting the gremlin and had the msd box checked, ok. I replaced the coil and checked the distributor and it ohmed where it was suppose to be. My msd guy did say check and or replace my toggle switch for the ignition. Had a few issues where it was the culpert.

I ran the car and the only thing I had changed was the coil and the engine to a 496 and it ran fine. 6.23 @ 108 mph. I think the mph is a little slow but other than that was pretty good.

After going thru everything I had the crank checked. The crank was out 8 degrees. #1 was right is why when I degred it came out right but after checking from the keyway back it was out 8 degrees. So when I thought it was right it really was 116 not a 108 and was retarded. I have got a 454 steel crank and had it all balanced and gona try it that way. The said the crank can be fixed but would cost couple hundred bucks. Not worth it on a cast crank.

The *crank* was 8 degrees off ? Holy crap !!!! No wonder you couldn't find the issue !!!!

Glad you were finally able to sort it out.

So the keyway was off 8 degrees? Why not just remark the balancer?
