Engine problem

#1 Post by novaz » Tue Jan 23, 2007 12:51 pm

Went to start my engine last night after a couple months not running it
turned over and fired but is backfiring through the carb and the blower pop off plate.
It has fresh gas,7.5psi at the carb, clean filters, fuel level in carb mid way on the sight glass, distributor+ timing is locked out and tight in block, plugs are giving a good spark so I am thinking the MSD is ok removed the blower belt and its the same so I dont think blower is affecting it, plugs and headers are real sooty SO is it just not having been run for a while or something simple I am missing its concerning that it back fires through the carb I did not want to chance running it too long.
any help or ideas would be welcome
Thanks
Royz

If its an Electric fuel pump, are you sure it was turned off properly? And stayed off. For if it was not, it could have filled the intake and chambers with fuel, and also I have seen it drain into the block causing a deisel effect and distroying the rods once it does start. Try pulling the plugs out and turning it over several times, check the oil first for any fuel, this cant hurt anything that I know of, but it will help clear the system out. The sooty plugs would be explained by any extra fuel. The back fireing would also be explained as a slow burn through the carb due to any extra fuel.

Are you using fresh fuel? It'll go south quick if it sits for long.

yes pump was off because i always have the battery on trickle charge out of the car
yes fresh c116
I flushed the system with regular gas and checked both inline filters which were clean before trying to fire it
IT turned over easy and i had oiled the bores after last running it and left the plugs slightly loose
I am going to email Patrick at pro systems because i am unsure if the back fires have damaged the carb or not there was no flame just smoke but i dont want to run it until i find the problem
Thanks for your replies
I appreciate it

Might want to pull the distributor cap off and see if there is anything wrong there. Sounds like a timing deal, or it's flooded/fouled plugs. Might go ahead and put some fresh plugs in it too.

if they arent fouled you may have one cracked start with fresh plugs first happens all the time...

check your valve springs, make sure they arent dead. if i know that the engine is not gonna be run for a month or more i back off the rocker arms so the valves are all closed.

I agree with sixpack. Are any of you valves hanging open. That would cause the problems you are discribing. Pull the valve covers, back your rockers off and check to see if the retainers are all at the same height. If not you have broken springs.

Hope this helps

Thanks, it was cool to run the 1/4 mile again. 149.51 mph was way faster than I'd ever been. Too bad my "big" slicks are a little too old to work well. The 9.14 was on a very soft tuneup. I know its got a 8.99 in it! Hopefully I'll get a chance to go after that sometime this year.

resealing

#15 Post by novaz » Sun Feb 04, 2007 3:50 pm

Still did not find the original problem but as I am reassembling this top end
is there any gain in scuffing slightly the gasket surfaces on the intake as that is where i have had leaks in the past I will be using the ultra Black Permatex sealer on the front and rear ends on the block and i center punched across the lands on the block side and it has always sealed well.
Thanks
Royz
