silly question

#1 Post by 427belair » Mon Feb 26, 2007 10:04 pm

hi everyone

I have kind of a silly question. I have a chance to buy a 555 bbc at a very good price because the owners car didnt certify for 7.50 so he is parting out the rest of the car. His car ran 8.0's in the 1/4 sprayed and 8.70's n/a @ 2100 lbs. So here is the silly part the nova im building will only tech out for a 10 flat and I would like to any ideas for slowing it down, granted my car will weigh 3200 or so with me in it. I know I wont be using the n20. I dont want to really change the major components, even though the price is right, its really more than i had bugeted for my motor, but i cant pass up the deal.
thanks for any advice

what gear in the rear end are you running? put a higer gear in there and that should slow you down some. you could also put a thicker head gasket in to lower compressioin ratio a little. also replace the cam with a less aggresive one. if it's that good of a deal you could re-sell the motor and make some money

Throw a extra 1000lbs in the car and that will be good for about 1 sec. :D

I wouldn't mess with the head gasket thickness. Poor quench can lead to detonation.

Short shift it, set the launch soft, pull back the timing, add weight, take gear out of it, bolt a big ricer wing on the back, let a Ford guy drive it...etc :)

Put 275/60 street radials on it, now that would be a fun way to slow it down hehehe

How about popping the chute at the 60' timers?

im all kinds of excited.
i just bought the motor. its a 555 w/ dart oval ports, dart intake, demon 1250, jesel shaft rockers and belt drive, oliver rods, callies crank, vernolia pistons, stephs pan, elect water pump . ohh and a built power glide w/ a new 5500 stall converter, air shifter with solenodes all for 8k.
so back to slowing down, is a 1000 lbs heavier about the same as a seconds slower? if so i only need to slow down a few 10ths and i figure ill just lower shift points and my ignition and headers aren't as good as what he was running.

you need to ck the cam card, it will show alot of duration that kills low end ...also 8.70 at 2100 is like 700hp don't get too carried away working to slow it down use a carb adapter and use a 850 carb that will kill 4-5 tenths make up for low end torque and still alow it to high MPH. just a note in the mid 90s i raced super street in a 3000lb camaro with a 468 and a 1050.. car ran 10.30s took the secondary cam out no back barrels how much do you think it fell off... 5 tenths with an extra 50lbs the car would run 10.90 at 125.
make a plan and stick to it !!
