found this a week or so ago while changing my carb and intake.when I got it out and tore it apart and found nothing wrong luckily but still havent identified what it is . I found it in the oil returns on the heads and under the intake and found some in the oil pan. the only thing I can posisibly figure is the guy I got the car from is a jerk off and threw it in the motor before he tradedit to me

possibly valve spring shim stock breaking? i had pieces similiar to these on my first engine i had and was from valve spring shim stock broken off underneath valve springs. pulled valve covers to adjust valves and noticed it and at first thought it was from valve springs (end tips) so decided to put in new valve springs and that's when we found some of the shims were all broken into pieces like those in your pics and was not the spring end tips after all. took heads to a reputable machine shop and had them set up new springs at correct installed height and never had a problem with them again. Good Luck!

Looks like valve springs, if you look at the bottom of the spring next to the shim. The coil should come to a point. Those pieces look like the points.
