Car Craft Nitrous Plate Shootout

#1 Post by John_Heard » Tue Sep 20, 2005 8:55 am

Car Craft Magazine had a pretty good nitrous plate comparision test in the November issue. They took plates from 6 manufacturers, NOS, Wilson, Speedtech, NX, Zex and Barry Grant and tried them on a 302 Ford that had like 9.5 compression. The Wilson plate took top honors with about 19hp over most of the other plates, the NX plate with the machined aluminum spray bar came in second. The other plates were pretty much the same peak HP producing about 200hp on a .063 jet. All of them were tested with the same set of NOS Big Shot Solenoids.

Pretty big eye opener that the plates were so close for me. I figured that new speedtech plate would generate some impressive numbers, it was about middle of the pack, but they did say it seemed to be more stable better than the other plates in terms of repeating the power levels and rpms where they peaked. I think NOS made a mistake in using their big shot plate for a 200 hp shot, they might have had better results using the cheater plate with it's lower flow potential at that HP level. I'd bet Wilson's phone is ringing off the hook today, they should be getting a lot more business soon.

I bought a custom intake manifold from wilson for my 454, the burst panels are great, I have only needed to replace one from a lean backfire, and I was thankful I had them. I also have 2 of the carbon fiber nitrous bottles. Great company and they do a lot of r&d. no rip offs here.

I never found one at the Car Craft site. They have an old article about the wilson plate on there (copy of it at Wilsonmanifolds.com) but not the plate comparision.
