detonation is it a sound

sorry if this is a stupid question is detonation a sound or just speckel on the plugs?
My car is not as fast as I think it is.

BOTH, YOU CAN HEAR IT AND ITS ON THE PLUGS IF ITS REAL BAD.

I have no noise and plugs look new. I must be ok
