Nitrous solenoids stuck closed

#1 Post by Ron69SS » Wed Sep 22, 2010 5:24 pm

Hi,

Trying to get the car ready for some fall racing, and the purge doesn't work. It draws current and clicks, but nothing.
Ditto for the main nitrous solenoid.
These are Edelbrock.
What goes wrong with them and can I fix it?
Fuel solenoid works fine.
Car has been sitting for a year.....my bad.

Kind of rare both of them going out at once. Are you sure nothing is blocking flow in the nitrous, like clogged filters. How much bottle pressure did you have? Some times too much won't allow them to open. You can put a feeler gauge on the stud thru the middle holding the coil down and it should stick to it when they come on. You can rebuild the plungers if they're bad but if that's the case they would probably be leaking.

Bottle after all this time is at 900 psi. It was fresh when I put it in.
I removed the nitrous line from the solenoids, and it runs free and clear.
So I'm a bit puzzled.
I purged the system the last time I ran the car, and I mean I purged it in the garage. I probably should have purged the whole system.
I understand the too much pressure thing, I ran into that when it was hot out and the bottle went past 1000psi. I actualy increased the wire size to the solenoids to combat that.

So after further review, I tapped on the solenoids, and both started working.
Bottle pressure quickly dropped to 600.....so it wasn't as full as I remember.
Seems the purge line was plugged...it's plastic.
The main nitrous line to the plate had gas in it? Probably from not using the nitrous for over a year.
Good thing I didn't assume all would work while racing.

I have a fresh bottle I'll install and check operation.

Thanks,

ron

You may want to take a minute and pull the piston out of the nitrous noids. Better now than at the track.
IF it has rubber seals, the gas contamination makes them swell...or they just could be old and need replaced anyway.
