Alternator mount question

#1 Post by one_fast_camaro » Sun Apr 09, 2006 9:41 pm

I need to mount an alternator on my car. I run a electric water pump and no other accessories. My engine block doesn't have the bolt holes on the drivers side to mount the standard low mount kit, does anyone have a suggestion on what I should do?

I use a GM sbc smog pump bracket on the right side(passanger) of the block. With a 105 amp alt off a 93 or 4 impala. They mount the same as the old style 48-60 amp alt.I have fought this for a long time but dad came up with this and it has worked great for years now. if you need a pic let me know.

Check with Alan he is a nice guy but when I was checking he could never come up with one that doesn't use the water pump. Powermaster makes a low mount for a camaro/nova but they woundn't sell just the bracket and the kit was high.

julven post up a pic of your alternator please, and I will check with alan. I'm having the same problem of trying to find a bracket that doesn't use the water pump to mount.

one_fast_camaro,

What block do you have that doesnt have the bolt holes on the drivers side of the block? I'm just curious. I run a Dart Little M block and was hoping to run the low mount one from Jeg's that says it's for full body cars with stock frames...

Then I'm buying one of their chromed 105amp alternators and hopefully calling it a day after that.

Thanks,

Scott

I run a gm 400 block, I know it's probably not long for this world, but what the h&#@, my engine makes a little over 500 to the tires on the motor alone. I am only spraying a 200 shot with a second stage of a 50 shot, just in case. I built the motor 2 yrs ago and made 2passes and twisted my rear axle housing in my old car, So this motor only has 2 runs and 2 dyno pulls on it. I couldn't afford a dart block at the time I built the motor, and my future plans are to upgrade to a twin turbo LS1 based engine to run on pump gas. My 400block has the bosses on the block, but they are not drilled and tapped. Let me know how that alternator works out for you and if you think it would be adaptable to the passenger side.

hmm, my 400 block has them drilled and tapped. you could always drill em out and tap yourself.

SORRY FOR THE DELAY GUYS. I know their is a few wanting these pics of the bracket. The first is a little differnt than the on I use on my car being that it is narrow but it is off a late 80's malibu. The one on my car is off my 85 chevy truck. I have been using this for years and never thrown a belt.It would be for a long water pump.I know it isn't a nice cnc bracket but it works. Let me know if i can help anymore I am just a little slow about getting to things as busy as life is sometimes. If the pics dont come up i will mail them to John and see if he will post them. Thanks Jason

well i don't know about the dealer i have never looked to see it you can still get them. I will check monday morning( I work for a Chevy dealer) but try a salvage the one on my car is from a 85 truck and the one on the fender cover is from a late 80's malibu.we have never used the malibu one but it looks the same just a little more narrow at the bottom. We wish it was a little more cleaner looking on the adjustment but it works. I might have all of 5.00 in it. My dad has worked for gm dealer for 30 years an has kept everthing he ever owned so we have 6 shops/barns full of this type of junk/gold.LOL if you want i can get you the part number for the alternator.thanks jason

I found a smog pump bracket like that at ricks first generation this morning for 30.00 so I got the bracket. Now I need the part # for the alternator. Is it a one wire or a three wire alt?

The part # for the alt is GM part # 10463215 or the delco # is 321-506 and the pigtail for the alt is 88987962 or delco # PT1742. It would probly be considered a three wire but we only use two. If you can get your hands on it we just used the 95 impala wiring diagram. You might think about a alternator to head bolt from a 85 truck so you can get a bolt that will work the hardware store never seems to have one log enough.let me know how it turns out.Jason
