one wire alt what size for charging wire ?

#1 Post by fridaydriver » Sun Feb 25, 2007 3:19 am

I bought a kit from summit and I will relocate the battery in the trunk. I'll also install a one wire 100 amp alternator. what size of wire should I use from the alt to the the rear battery ?

What is the length of the wire going to be?

I'd suggest putting your starter relay up front like on the firewall to reduce the length of the alternator wire. If you did that, an 8 gauge copper cable approx 5 feet long would have about 5.38% voltage drop (.646 volts) at 12 volts w/100 amps load.

If you ran that same cable 15 feet, the voltage drop would be 1.937 volts.

Actually I don't have any starter relay all the wire for starting are at the solenoid. Should I had a relay ?

from engine to the trunk lenght is approximatively (car is not at home) 12 feets.

I guess it isn't a necessity, most people usually do put a Ford Solenoid on for a starter relay. If you're going to race the car you're going to need a rear shut off switch too. There's a diagram here http://www.dragstuff.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=837 in this post, that's the wiring setup I'm referring to except to put the ford starter solenoid up front.

If you're going to run 12 feet you'll need 4 gauge or larger wire to be around 5% voltage drop.

Something like that should work fine. I don't know if you need the alternator disconnect version "if" you hook the alternator to a starter relay up front. If you run the alternator all the way to the rear then sure that would be a nice feature.
