Fixing 9" Ford bolt leaks

#1 Post by John_Heard » Fri Sep 30, 2005 11:53 am

I'm having a problem with leakage around the carrier bolts on my 9" rearend. From the factory they had copper washers on them but I've wore out/lost/damaged most of mine. Regular washers let it leak just enough to be a pain. Any reccomendations on what to use as a replacement for the OEM washers? I haven't been able to find any around here.

You can sometimes find those brass/copper washers at a tractor dealer or repair shop. Thats were I purchase mine. Diesel engines use them to seal fuel fittings.

You may be able to find the washers at a hydraulic supply house as well. They use them on banjo fittings.

Just curious here, Do you use a paper gasket or silicon for your gasket? I've always used silicon but with that it is a pain in the butt to get the center section out.

You might find some brake hose washers the right size if the hydraulic hose supplier doesn't have them. Maybe something for a big truck might be big enough to fit.

a ford dealer can still order them but they are pretty high dollar, I found some brass washers at ace hardware. Another guy turned me onto them, what works for him
