need tranny advice!

#1 Post by nova6911 » Tue Aug 07, 2007 7:41 pm

ok peoples, here it goes.
I have a 69 nova ( for street and strip use)on the build with a 4.56 gear in the rear, 28 tall tire and i will be building a 422 sbc for it and i am hoping for 550 t0 600 hp. My question is ....is it better to build a good 350 or go with 400 trans for this car.

It is my understanding that a350th is much lighter and will free up some hp but its not as strong as the 400th and therfore needs more parts and money spent on it to make it strong. The 400 is much stronger but robs you of horsepower and is much heavier. Is this correct?

What is everybodys advice and views here?

you might want to consider going with a glide
74 chevy luv 355 sbc bracket car
70 Nova SS bracket / t.n.t car.
(Yes REAL SS 396 DISCS 12B0LT ETC)

For what it will cost to get the 350 to last, you might want to consider a built 200R4.

355 sbc 3100 lb car 350 turbo 4500 converter foot brake. 11.20 400 w brake same mtr and converter trans change only 11.35 foot brake. on the t brake it would go mid 11.20s so no real change, but apples to apples it's over a tenth slower (400) did that with a customers car this year..for what it's worth. 400s stronger but heavy if you need a brake use a glide from what i'm finding they are more consistant and not measurably slower. and cheeper too
make a plan and stick to it !!
