Convertor gone bad??
I need some help figuring out what my problem is loosing ET and MPH. Last season I was running 6.80's regularly N/A and my last couple passes I started seeing foot brake stall speeds around 3000. Previously had only been able to get 2200 without pushing through the lights. And with those passes my ET went up to 7.30ish. So I figures the convertor was shot. BTW, it was a group 1 TCI 8".
Tried another convertor from a buddy. Group 2 TCI 8". Installed his convertor and checked the pan and no signs of metal in the filter or pan. Made my first pass on it this afternoon. MAN, I think it got worse. Pulled a 1.70 60ft. and 7.41 ET. Second pass was a 1.74 60ft. and 7.50 ET.
I am beginning to wonder if I have a different problem. He said his convertor was doing fine when he pulled it to switch to a BTE N2O convertor. What's the chances both convertors are bad?
Both convertors are now foot brake stalling way more than I had been seeing when running 6.80's. And feels sluggish and lazy when leaving the line. Doesn't flash really high or nothing like that, just has a higher foot brake stall. But in high gear at the top of the 1/8th it feels like it picks up and starts to pull hard. I have some plugs overdue for a change and brakes need going through, but can't think of anything other than the convertor that would cause this.
Both convertors have been sprayed but not by me. Not yet anyway!
I have decided to take the group 1 convertor that I pulled out and have it split open and checked. Maybe it's possible both convertors are bad. Anybody got any suggestions what else to check? Could the brakes maybe be holding and not releasing properly?
FYI, it's a 1.82 glide, manual valve body, no brake, hardened shaft PG spline, no metal in the pan or filter to speak of. Just a little fine dusting of paste on the pan that looks like the texture of antiseize. Please help!

I had a tci nitrous converter and my rpms were getting higher every pass. After a few days of racing, i was pushing 7500 rpms at the 8th where as normaly I would expect about 6500.

I called Atlantic Coast Converters today, and the guy said sounds like a bad converter. Evidentally 2 of them. But he said no way to know for sure without splitting it. So I'll try to take it down to Conway SC one day this week to find out.

Yep, I had a bad converter! The sprag was busted. Decided to go spragless for durability. And changed the stator to give a little more excitement off the line. They also changed the turbine fin angle just a bit to make it have less slip on the top end. Took it to Atlantic Coast Converters in Conway, SC. Pretty cool folks. They fixed it while I waited and even let me watch them split it open and inspect it. We'll see how it works within a few days.

Update is: I really don't know yet! I've had tons of bad luck. I lost a screw out of a Proform baseplate (throttle plate) and it closed up my plugs in #5 and #6 cylinder somehow!!?? I don't even know if the screw came out or if it's in the top of a piston. And it's not a brass screw, they're stainless. After finding that, I topped off my battery with the cables removed. When I went to reinstall the cables I dropped the positive cable and it landed on the bed floor of the truck and made a huge spark And both the cables where off!! So I figured the ignition was somehow storring energy and back feeding it. When I reconnected the cables and tried to fire it up, the engine popped, skipped, and raised hell, then knocked off. And I noticed a sizzling sound coming from my Mallory #685 box. Sent it in 3 weeks ago to be repaired and no word yet!
So, I have no idea yet how the converter will do, but I sure am getting a damn bait of waiting on Mallory!

Since my last update, I got my box back from Mallory. They say they didn't do anything to it. Funny to me it's not making a sizzling sound anymore. I don't know what's up with that. And I think the screw that fell out of the carb base plate has caused me a bent valve or either stuck into the valve seat cause my engine is running better since I got the box back, but is still popping through the carb. Never in my days have I seen more things go wrong at one time. You know how it is, when 2 or 3 things happen close to the same time, you don't know where to look first. It makes trouble shooting a pain in the ass. Just have to do 1 thing at a time.
