9" rear end

#1 Post by 427belair » Wed Oct 01, 2008 11:12 pm

I broke the 3rd member in my nova last weekend and was wondering how much stronger the nodular factory 3rd member are vs. the standard case? I wish this would have happened earlier because I bought new 31 spline axles when I broke my axles a few months ago. I was told if I went to 35 spline it would make the 3rd member weak so I stayed with 31's and broke the 3rd member anyway. I am tring to make it stonger for the least amount of money.

The Moser and Strange nodular cases are getting so cheap to buy they are almost the same as OEM cases. They are build from a lot better material as well. I would investigate that option.

I'm curious. Why would adopting 35 spline axles make your 3rd member weak ? I've never heard that before, though it doesn't mean it's not true. Believe it or not, they fill whole *books* with things I don't know

Im not sure exactly, but it had something to do with the size of the bearings and how much material had to be removed to fit the 35 spline bearings. Also I was looking at the Strange case, but I think I can get a factory nodular case for next to nothing from my boss.

I ended up using 33 spline Mosers with my stock narrrowed 12-bolt housing with a locker. So far, so good. Of course, I'm not making near the horsepower some of these other rocketeers are.

I think the 35 spline axles need the 3.250 bearing size third members if I recall correctly.

Just for future reference Mark Williams now makes a 35 spline spool that will fit in a small bore case.

by 'small bore case' I take it you're referencing the OEM 9 ?
