T-400 Vs Powerglide

#1 Post by 67SS » Sun May 03, 2009 9:02 pm

I have a 3350lb 500CI Chevelle, 4.30 gear 29x10 tire. I am thinking of switching from the PG to the 400. Does anybody have some before and after comparisons on Et and mph? Either way from a 400 to a PG or PG to 400.

I need to gain a couple of tenths in my car. My car will run 10.10's in good weather and 10.2-.3 in "bad" air. The guys I race with all run three speeds and say the PG in a 3350 lb car takes to long to "wind up" and I would be better off switching to a three speed.
The guy I bought the car from used to run a 400 but switched to a PG to try to make the car more consistent for bracket races. I really remember him telling me that the times didn't really change. I could be wrong.

Any Ideas and Suggestions?

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1261 ...... try that but to follow up i have a glide in the car, and sold the air shifter and 400 and gave the extra drive shaft away.... to date spragless trans spec converter and a gear change to 4.10s have ran 5.62 @126 on a 275 hit and 9.09 @ 150 glide and 4.10 and runs 9.70s on the mtr...the turbo was to unforgiving with HP.. you will have to chase the converter and chase the converter.. NA vers hose 2 diffrent animals..on a small tire the glide is MY Friend john..C

I was also worried about the hookup. I figured I would have to change the rear gear back to a 4.10 with the 400, but didn't know if that would hurt or just offset the gear reduction and I would be right back to where I am. (Except my wallet would be lighter)

In the classes I run (Nostalgia Super Stock) I cannot run a brake or any kind of electronics. (no nitrous either) I can step up the tire size to a 10.5W, but it will not fit in my stock wheel well and I don't want to cut my car up. Several of the guys have gone to 4 speeds to get these big pigs out of the hole.

So if I read the posts right, your car is quicker with the glide?

You dont need a 4 speed to get them out of the hole. I am running a th400, 4.10 gears with the tightest 8" converter that ATI makes @ 3680lbs. I leave at <1500 rpms. Just takes a little suspension work.

I have been talking to a couple of engine builders about this and they have all said to raise my stall speed. I need to hook up my trans brake first and see what I can actually stall, but they have all suggested right at 1000 rpm below my RPM going through the traps, which would work out to be about a 6000 stall.

I think you need more than 1000 rpm difference if you want the converter to lock up efficiently.

My old converter flashed between 5900-6150 depending on air conditions and the engine saw between 7600-7700 through the traps. Converter slippage off the data logger was 5 to 5 1/2%.

Dot racer is right closer to 1500 rpm the 4.30 and turbo might be a touch faster..traction needs to be at it's best bob west's car is a nice piece , there are things you can do at 9.90, that will get you in trouble at 8.90.. try the turbo a spragless converter and in the 5500.5700 flash stalls.

Its pretty hard to argue with this logic. This big ol thing rund 9's. What kind of suspension are you two running up front?
