4.10 to 4.56

Thinking very seriously about swapping from 4.10 to 4.56 gear set in my car. What kind of rpm increase in the 1/4 shold I expect? I am hearing anywhere from 400-700. Right now only come through the traps at 6400 rpm, which IMO is not high enough on my setup.

Also, I see Richmond Gear has a sportsman set that is a bit over $200, or a different set for about $190 that is supposed to be 6 lbs lighter...which set should I go with?

If it's a drag only car I would go with a pro gear with that weight...I went from a 4.30 gear to a 4.57 and gained 275 rpm so you should be where you want to be..

Finally got a chance to work on putting the gear in tonight. Got the old one out and should get the new one set tomorrow night or Monday.

I have another question on something I noticed today when taking out the driveshaft. A couple of years ago I had a driveshaft made after I broke the stock u joints and ended up tearing a whole lot of stuff up. I had some problems getting the driveshaft out of the car. I actually had to take one of the caps off of the u-joint to get it out and I am wondering if the shaft is too long? I looked at the transmission yolk and it will only slide about 1/8". Is this enough? Could this cause the car to initially hook and then spin as it may be limiting the travel? Just curious, I may be way off base here.

Most all of the driveshafts I've had made up had 3/4" to 1" of pull out.

Most all of the driveshafts I've had made up had 3/4" to 1" of pull out.

That's what I thought was acceptable to. It is my fault, as it was a bear to measure. I am going to take it and get it cut down so it will fit a little better. Does anybody know what kind of problems the driveshaft being too long can cause, other than putting stuff in a bind? I am just curious if this may have been some of my hooking problems as it was not allowing the suspension to travel the way it should.

When you took out the shaft was the rear hanging or did you have it on jack stands ? The rear will move forward a little bit when it hangs so you need to have the suspension loaded to measure correctly. If its too long it could damage the tranny but I doubt it had any effect on your hooking problems.

If it bottoms out it'll cause all kinds of problems. Neighbor's car was doing that and it kept eating transmissions. Don't recall exactly what it was breaking right now, but it tore stuff up.

I was also told it could mess up the main bearings in the motor. I will be getting it fixed this week...for sure, I guess so far I have been lucky.

Got everything situated and made it to the track this weekend. Don't really see any improvement, maybe even hurt the et. Only running 1/8 mile this past weekend. Air was much better than last time at same track back in July and only ran about .1 faster et through the 1/8. 60' times were about .05 better. MPH was also about the same. I may need to look into some other options......
