Lucky me...
Ok, so it looks like this new transmission is on its way out the door.
It's been running hot (200+) and has been acting wonky for a couple of weeks now. Last week it really started acting up.
Wednesday nite it started slipping in first gear and would not engage until I blipped the throttle. Once moving it would shudder until it came up to speed. I babied it back to the house and the damn thing would just barely climb the driveway into the shop.
I'm talking to the builder now and I'll probably pull the damn trans out and get it back to him to rebuild.
I have had the absolute worst experience with transmissions in this ride... This will be the um.... 5th one since 2006 I think...
grumble, grumble, grumble...

Re: Lucky me...
Just dropped the pan. The rollers are not from the sprag - they're from the torrington thrust bearing in my planetaries.
The top picture is what I found in the pan. The bottom picture is from another TH400 assembly I have sitting here in the shop.
All this stuff will have washed through my pump, cooler, converter and valve body at this point. This one is gonna get ugly before we're done.

Re: Lucky me...
Definitley loks like time for a new trans builder.
Re: Lucky me...
After comparing parts, I'm not certain now these needle bearings are from the planetaries, at least not the ones I've shown in the last post. Have to wait and see what the damage assessment is I guess.

Re: Lucky me...
Just sent my glide in for a "Freshen up" after about 70 runs. It has the biggest input shaft we could get and all the best parts. Just got the news that the input shaft is twisted, the planetaries are screwed, and the output shaft is twisted. This is a $5000 box!!
Goes to show, s*%t can happen to any trans.

Re: Lucky me...
Who's doing your glides?
Just talked to Keith Neal yesterday, he told me Conrad Scarry broke their Bruno Lenco three times at the NMRA race in Bowling Green. Ouch.... Big power hurts parts.

Re: Lucky me...
The guy in New Zealand who rebuilds my trans is excellent. He's been doing it over 20 years and I wouldn't use anyone else. He phoned the supplier in the states where we got the input shaft and was told they use those shafts in 3000 hp pro mod cars and have only ever had a couple twist. I'm only putting just over 2000 hp through it. Maybe I got the dud. No warranty on parts like that unfortunately.
I console myself with the fact I've never had any engine damage in two seasons.

Re: Lucky me...
2 years without damage with an engine with that much power certainly is something to be happy about!
