Who's ring and pinion?

#1 Post by 1quickchevy2 » Sat Nov 21, 2009 11:55 am

I'm putting a new set of gears in my 9", and wondering who's ring and pinion are you guys running? Any failure related info and who to stay away from would be appriciated. I'm going to get a quote for richmond and prescision. Anyone think is worth running a lightened ring? This is on mostly a street car with some strip duty.

I run a Richmond pro gear, got 2 yrs out of the last set. Not recommended for the street though.

Currently running Dewco, I've used Richmond street gears in the past and they held up fine.

OK thanks for the input guys. I won't be running the pro gear as recomended. Just a good street one. The center section i took out was dirrect from currie. Their nodular 9+, and it howled like a wolf! when coasting. I ran it anyway as i only had limited time to enjoy the car this summer. Upon inspection you could see that the pinion was wat down into the root of the gear, so just a word of caution to double check the mesh pattern if you get a pre assembled 3rd member from Currie. Talking to most guys around here the concensus is that most gear sets are as good as the next but 90% of it is in the set up. Thanks for sharing your info

One suggestion I'd make is to use shims when setting preload on the pinion. This is much better than the traditional crush sleeve because you can swap yokes without issue.

Yah, I would say a lot of keeping any gear alive would be a PROPER set-up. Can not say enough : You can buy the best parts in the world, IF installed wrong they will just be a pile of scrap metal real quick!

Good luck on your choice. I have installed Motive, Yukon, Richmond, Precision, and have had success with all of them. Again any and almost all failures have come from a customer mis install improper break in or just TOO many runs on the gears in a competition car (that comes from being just plain too cheap...lol )

The diff is fixed, and i went with a set of presision gears that the had in stock, because the richmonds would have to come from the states. Thanks again for all the input guys.
