In need of a gear change.

#1 Post by supernova » Tue Aug 17, 2010 9:06 am

Ok, here's the deal. The 4.30's are gone....... Way to big for the 275/60/15 D.R.

The trans has a 1.80 low set in it. So my question is how low do I go with the gear? I'm thinking of a 3.60-3.70 gear there abouts.

What do you all think?

I did get the car to run a 5.80 @ 121+ mph with a 1.44 60'.
And that's about it with this gear...........

What rpm did you go across the line at ? where do you want do go across at ? do you have more left in your nitrous tune, if so you have to factor in the mph gain with extra juice.

I has really nothing to do with the finish line. The 4.30 gear with the 1.80 low gear set in the trans is just plain too much for the tire off the starting line.... (275/60/15 drag radial)

I need to gain control of the tire at the starting line before it will ever run faster.

It still amazes metha you guys can go that quick on 275's. That is what was on my car before (not drag radials though) and I could waste them at will with 300 hp.

To help your traction issue, just swap out the 535 for my 496. I'll even let you keep the nitrous. With all the duration in mine you should have no problem getting off the starting line. Just trying to help :thumb:

Sometimes I think a smaller motor would do the trick. Naaa I'll keep my motor, thanks for the offer.

I think with a gear change it will go into the .50's with some tuning. It's not going fast enough yet.

I would think you would be concerened with the finish line ,rpm of motor the most as far as setting up gearing
I have a 4:86 gear on a 29 slick and I am on the rev limit chip of 7500 way before finish line, I am going to go to a 31,or 32 slick or put my 4:30 gears in it, so I can stay off high side chip

In this case the gear is holding back the starting line attack. The tune up is so soft to keep from over powering the tires that it make it very slow off the line. Putting less gear in it will be less leverage to spin the tire so I can put more tune up in it and run a 1.30 or less 60" time.
It's a nitrous motor for a head up class. I'm not worried about the rpm at the finish line as much as I am worried about getting this 3300 lb car with small tire off the starting line. The rpm at the stripe is what it is.

I want to know how it works out for you. Im running a 4.30 gear w/ a 28" tire also. I know your doing a heads up class so its apples to oranges but I dont want to kill my 60' on motor.

Hey Jason,
I can't even 60' on motor. A 1.44 is the best it will do with out spinning the tires.....

So you dont care what rpm you go across the line as long as you can 60ft quicker than a 1.30?

It's a 7400 rpm nitrous motor I think it will be ok out the back at any rpm.
With the 4.30 gear an the 1.80 in the trans, It's running out of 1st gear in about a 120 ft on nitrous way to soon for this tq motor if it gets traction.
On a DR tire I learning that you have to run the first half of the track as hard as you can with this type of set up and motor ou the bak
