I am rebuilding a Turbo 400 transmission. I wanted to know what upgrades I should make to the transmission.
This is going in a race only car no street use with about a 700 hp engine.

Case Saver - keeps the shock rebound from shocking and taking the lugs out of the case. This one is billet aluminum from Coan and is pretty spendy (aound $90). You can buy something as good for as low as $20 elsewhere.jplace wrote:I am rebuilding a Turbo 400 transmission. I wanted to know what upgrades I should make to the transmission.

Re: Turbo 400 Transmission
I read about replacing the intermediate roller clutch bearing with a 34 element sprag. I think there is a direct drum roller clutch bearing. Should that be replaced as well with an upgraded sprag ?

Unfortunately, you're way past what I know about internals on these things. I'm betting though that there are others here on the Forum who can answer that question.jplace wrote:I read about replacing the intermediate roller clutch bearing with a 34 element sprag. Re: Turbo 400 Transmission
34 element sprag is a must, you can swap the flat bushings at the tailshaft for torrington roller bearings. Have a good shop re-work the pump, there is a trans brake mod (don't remember specifics) that can be done even if you don't have a brake helps increase line pressure. Good (red) clutches and steels, and use teflon sealing rings. There are direct drums that can hold 6 clutch packs instead of 5. I have never tried that the stock drum works fine for me. A manual valve body comes with its own mods as well. These are very easy to do most of the work yourself, just need a press to get the drums apart.
