Rearend play, rotation

#1 Post by Flatstick » Sun Mar 26, 2017 9:38 am

Go easy on me, I'm a newbie.
We have bought an older (1995) hardtail dragster with a SBC engine and 9" Ford rearend. My question is about play in the rotation of the rear wheels. When I have the car up on Jack stands, I can rotate one wheel about 1/4" before the other side engages, is this normal or should I be looking for a problem? Hadn't really paid much attention to it until I was at another driver's place and noticed there was zero play when I rotated the wheels on his car. Granted, the rearend in his car probably cost as much as our whole car lol.

Sounds like you might have a "mini-spool" in the rear end. That's quite a bit of play if it was just axle splines involved. Pull the chunk and take a look.
