Hey Guys,

Finally bought myself a drag car, somewhat by accident. I posted a bid on this;
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0759043006
http://www.racingjunk.com/Sportsman-Bra ... CERT..html

Didn't think there was any way I'd win with a bid of 12k, but as you see, I won it, and here I am.

I know about as much about cars and racing as the average car junkie wanna be who grew up in the 80s / 90s reading every Hot Rod and Car Craft cover to cover. Then I was broke for a while. Then I got into Harley's. Took my 2000 Deuce down the strip a few times but when the `busa's show up you feel real real slow on a hog. Between that experience and Pinks All Out, let's say I've had an itch. Have a wife and 2 kids (7, 3) - I'm sure you can imagine my just how thrilled my wife was that I won this auction. Anyway, I'm pretty stoked about maybe finally being able to go racing.

Right now unfortunately, I'm trying to winnow through fact / fiction in the auction. What showed up at my door was the car in the pictures, but I can tell some of the story was a work of fiction. Makes me question how much else is.

Until they actually shipped the car, the dealer selling the car wouldn't put me in touch with the guy in the story who built it. As the car was being loaded onto the hauler headed my way, I got the number. Called the guy and it turns out he hasn't had the car for 5 years. He said it has been a drag car since `74. Looks like the chassis cert has been outdated for about 3 years? Not sure exactly how to read the punch out. He claimed the car ran 10:01 consistently in the quarter. Best run ever was a 9.99. Ad says 9.90 consistently. Now you guys know there's a huge difference between campaigning a 10 second car and a 9 second car. Honestly, I'd prefer if it ran 10:01 so I didn't have to go through the rest of the BS.

So the builder hasn't touched the car in 5 years because he had a heart attack in it last time he drove it. I have no idea when the last time it was run down track. There was a ET dial display in the car set to 6.55 which tells me it was run in the 1/8th at some point and calculators on the net would put that at a mid 10 second 1/4.

As for the 734 HP advertised, well, the builder told me that too - at the crank, when built probably 10 years ago. But if the car really weighs 2300 pounds and has 734 hp, it should run mid 8's, no?

So what exactly is this that I bought? Dunno. Can I trust the internals are what they're claimed to be? Dunno.

Take a close look at the pictures, particularly the engine compartment. Can anyone point out what they're carefully trying not to show?

Throttle linkage. Looks like something my kid put together with his erector set. Gas pedal moves about 1/4 inch in the car. There is NO WAY this car was driven down track like this. I guess that's one way to keep someone from stealing the race car on your lot. Install a throttle linkage that limits engine RPM to 3k and high stall converter so the car barely moves? Aside from that, I have NO IDEA why this was like this. Can't wait till tomorrow so I can call the seller and ask. Suffice it to say, the car is not "race ready". The paint / bodywork is nothing special. The stickers on the door come to find out those are covering pulled up paint chips.

Documents put this car in Columbus OH in the early 90s, then sold to a dealer in Indy in 06 and I bought it from another dealer in an Indy suburb who has had it for almost 2 years now. If anyone knows anything about this car, please let me know. Any words of advise on how to check this car over and make sure it's race ready please also chime in. Changing fluids is a given. Should I be worried about the creeks and groans when I lean on it to make the suspension travel? How do I know if I can trust the slicks?

Anyway, my name's John. Nice to meet y'all. Anyone else go to Great Lakes Dragaway? If all goes well, might see you Thursday night.

John

Hi John,

Welcome to the site.

Your car looks nice, looks like it has the go fast parts to run 9.9's but like you found out, you never know what you are getting until you actually get it.

The one thing that I see and I don't know if it's anything to worry about it on the track bar. the front looks like it is bolted to the front ladder bar mount but the rear mount is welded onto the lower bar of the ladder bar were most times, it's bolted to the ladder bar bracket on the rear end. I guess this does the same purpose, but just looks weird to me

If the motor has been sitting for this long, and your at doubt if what you got it what you got, maybe this would be a good time to freshen up the motor and check things out.

You do got a nice looking car though :thumb:

Have fun with it.

Bruce

Lots of folks use Photobucket to host their pix. Get a free account and upload your photos, then embed a link in the posts here to display the photo.

Use the 'Img' button above or just copy and paste the direct link from the Photobucket Album page.

Pretty simple.

I had a 70 Nova once. I'll never forget that car. When I bought it, it had crager rims and wheels that stuck out about an inch past the wheel well. To jack the car up, the guy installed ladder bars and air shocks - essentially the air shocks were the rear suspension! lol Rear didn't squat much (at all) but you could light em up in 3rd!

My name is Steve. I race a 72 Pontiac Ventura and my wife Lisa races a 73 dodge Dart smallblock that has been known to pull a big wheelie or two. Here are some videos.
