When is it too cold to race?

#1 Post by John_Heard » Wed Oct 14, 2009 3:30 pm

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are about when it's just too darn cold to race?
Never mind being comfortable, how cold can the track get before you feel that it's just to cold to race on?

I've seen some NHRA Pro Stock studies that show that traction drops off significantly below 85* track temp (not air temp).

I've seen that 45* number mentioned in a few places, wonder how that was arrived at?

When I won my combo race weekend before last it was 52* air temp. Last weekend's race at cedar falls, IA was still on when the forecast was 40* , but when the forecast dropped to 36* with 30 - 40 mph winds and 50% chance of snow it got cancelled.

Maybe I'm wimpy, but I try not to get too obnoxious with my blower build if the air temps get much below 55 degrees or so.

The temp change is pretty extreme when you're on and off the throttle and I'm thinking that prolly adds stresses I don't want in this motor. Of course, thats street driving, too. My 2 cents...

Air temp this weekend is supposed to be around 45*F and I don't think the track will be super warm or to good for traction. But, gotta try anyways. :?

How cold before they close the tracks in Canada? I assume they aren't heated right? I know there's one in Alaska that is heated but that's the only one I know of.

I had never even heard of heated tracks before. We had it snow at a national event in July though.
I actually don't think they close the tracks because of the cold. This is the last race of the year and its a rain out from two weeks ago, otherwise we would already be done.

Up here they close tracks due to cool temps and snow mostly (usually results in low car/fan counts, lol). Both tracks within a 3hr radius of me are closed at the end of sept.
