rim screws

Re: rim screws
I dought I would even run wheel screws at the slow speeds that Ed's car runs . Not enough power to turn the tire on the rim or take it off the rim!!!!!
I have a friend who put his blown street car in the wall a few years back. The cause, A TIRE CAME OFF THE RIM!!!!!!!!!

Re: rim screws
No screws here, drag radials or radial slicks, not real fast but leaves pretty hard at 3700lbs

Re: rim screws
I shoulda run the VAMP race. I had redlightitis, went out in the 3rd round. I did finish 3rd in points though I put a powershot on the car, made a couple time runs after I went out, tightened up the Santhuff shocks and went 6.25,6.20@108mph compared to 6.46@104 n/a.

Guess these guys and the numerous others like them that can be found every week bracket racing...John_Heard wrote:note Kyleracer's talking about an 8 second car, quite a bit faster than your car and beadlocks or screws are the norm for cars running that fast.
didn't get the memo for 8 second cars being their running mid to low 7's with 1000+HP!
John, you were saying!kyleracer wrote: Am trying to get in the 8's on motor alone
My 3124 lb. back halved ride runs well into the 8's on motor NOW! Sorry it's not a 555 like kyleracer's, just a little 4" stroke 522 that made 920HP!
More importantly for this discussion, my ride 60 foots 1.20...
1.31 with the back tires...
WITHOUT rim screws, bead locks, glue, spit, tubes, yada, yada, yada and will run sub 1.20 60 foots with the turn of a screw!
I didn't get the memo either!

Re: rim screws
I dont run screws or beadlocks I run permatex hi tack glue and have had good luck with it but Im looking into a set of beadlocks for the winter. I dont know the details on the special ed saga but I really dont see why this has started such and argument and made into such a big deal. Everybody has there ways and everybodys entitled to an opinion.
Re: rim screws
rim screws are always a fun topic!
John, looks like Wescott didn't get your 8 second car memo either and I'm certain Wescott Jr., his father and all their competors in SS/AH the most impressive cars in NHRA Super Stock WITHOUT rim screws or bead locks, are worried about spinning their tires off the rim!
If Charlie Wescott Jr. the NHRA National Record holder for the quickest and fastest SS/AH "Hemi" Cuda running 8.38 @ 157.08 and 1.156 60 foot at 3200 lbs. don't have bead locks or rim screws as fas as I know, YOU don't need them!TubbedTruck67 wrote:Went to mokan tonight and ran a new personal best. I went a 1.26 60ft and a 5.85@118to the 1/8 and a 9.22@145 out the back door 3200lb car

Re: rim screws
Run them or not, it will always be debated. Some people swear by them, some hate them. I'm not gonna chance breaking the bead and crashing. It's cheap insurance against a catastrophe.

Re: rim screws
It's an absolute waste of effort and a good set of wheels for the cars being discussed here!
Regardless of what you've read here, slicks ain't spinning off the rim without them!!!!
That said, it's your car, your $ and your time, do as you want!

The argument can be made for either case, in the end it's your shit, you make the call.

Re: rim screws
Well the car was running 7.5 - 7.6 with a little old 482 with steel merlin heads ( also a 4" stroke ) but I have not had the time to upgrade for the new rules to run 7.5 or slower. Not sure if it is worth it to upgrade or better off changing chassis to a new one. The car was parked for 2 yrs and then I put the 555 in to run motor only at 8.50. The converter was for the NOS and stalled at 3500 on the motor only. From reading on here I learned from posts (thanks- Neal) that a converter is only good for NOS or not ! So I got a new motor only 5800 from ATI and now it keeps raining I am not worried about the tires coming off bead just slipping/spinning and going out of balance ! The 32 x 14 were screwed with 12 on each bead and had 1.21 60ft. ATI suggested trying a taller tire to get better use of the torque so I am going to try the 32's and the 33's the same day. If it stops raining I will let u know what I find out. Maybe I will take the screws out and see what happens. On another subject that keeps coming up - I really enjoy the info from here as most only try to help not brag If everyone were to list everything that they have acomplished on every post it would take forever to read them ( or look at the pics ) I have won championships all my life in sports and racing and could bore everyone with the details but I think John has this site for info among racers not therapy for the insecure. But it does make me laugh that people think t-n-t is such a waste as I learn alot there as do the pros that I know. I would rather t-n-t a day than have to go to 5 races to change a combo and get it right.

Re: rim screws
I havent made 10000 passes but I have going to the track for a very long time, first time 1966, and I have only seen 2 cars have a tire problem that could have been prevented with screws or bead locks. I run screws because I dont want to take that chance, Like Hitchcock said, its cheap insurance. But I do like the glue idea, might try that next time.
