Weight Savings

#1 Post by Hitchcock » Sun Feb 21, 2010 3:18 pm

Since we are all putting the cars on diets, i decided to do mine as well. i started pulling the parts off the car that I am replacing during its transgression. Here is what I have come up with so far.

Old New

Seats (pair) 76 18
A C Box 22 X
Radiator 36 12
Front Wheels x2 48 30
Hood 42 17

272 77

Which will give me a savings of 195 pounds. The car with the all iron small block was 3280 pounds. The new improvements will yeild an aluminum top end big block, and a chrome moly back half. So that should take some weight out of it. But not sure much how much. I have it on good authority a lot. I'm sure the big block is gonna be heavier even with the aluminum top end stuff. I think the rear wheels are gonna be about the same as the big tires. The car was origonally gonna be a 10.5 tire car. But I have since changed my mind and sold my skinnies and have a set of 15x15 convo pro's and a set of good year 32x14.5 slicks. Anyone want to take a stab at the end weight??

Took another 10 or 15 pounds out of it with some of the under dash heat and cooling stuff. I still need to remove the core support, and the power steering stuff. Hoping to get another 20 pounds out there, then the power brake booster. Not sure what to expect there. It's 9" in diameter and about 6" deep. Then I will switch to an aluminum master cylinder as well.

It sure does. There is a lot more weight to take out before the back half does its job as well. This thing may not be a heavy as I though it was gonna be.

When I stripped all the undercoating and sound deadener from under the plymouth, it was a huge pile, around 40 lbs worth.

Its loud as shit inside now, but hey, it is a racecar.

I scraped 6 lbs 9.8 ounces of rubber out from under my car the other night. By next year, I'll have enough to mold a new tire!

Well the 272 pounds we took off the car earlier and the additonal 589 over teh weekend added up to a lot. Soem weight is going back in. The old steel wheels and the new aluminum ones weigh within a pound at 51 each. Then we are going back with moly round tube, and a solid rear end. So with the car origonally weighing 3280 w/o driver. This may turn out ok!!

it's funny to think a back half car is lighter, but it is, "Spot" my 67 coronet was over 3700 lbs before the back half and it now is 3408 , with no fiberglass or lexan on her... yet!

I know, 3400 is pretty good for a car that big with all steel body. It'll be easy to make her burn when you build that big 540 wedge. No get it ordered!

If someone makes them you can save a lot of weight in the front to offset the bbc with tubular control arms, rack&pinion,Strange brakes etc,etc if its in the budget . How about crash bars in the doors, power window delete, wiper delete etc, etc.

I thought about all that. But in a year or so, ol Tigwelder is gonna be doing a front half on my car so that stuff would be kind of a waste for now.

An old racer idea was that for every 100 lbs removed in a street car-your ET would drop one tenth.
