This is the part I hate!

#1 Post by supernova » Thu Jun 17, 2010 6:47 am

"The new car blues! We all have them. And I hate it.
I've had the motor in and out a few times, the trans in and out a few times, and now the rear end has to come back out......

Here's the deal,
I set up the rear end ( spring purches ) with the stock monoleaf springs. Pinion angle was right were it needed to be. I did not know that changing springs and nothing else would change the pinion angle. I changed only the springs with the Calvert Split Mono's. Not only did it change the pinion angle it also sided loaded the driver side spring. There is more to a leaf spring set up than just installing them.
I called Calverts and talked John about it and he said thair springs have a differant arch to them and would change the angle. He told my I would have to remove the old purches and reset up the angle with new purches. He also said he would feel my pain with my and sending me his new HD purches free of charge to help out. John Calvert has alway been a great guy. I am greatful for any help I can get!

The bad thing is I still have to fix it.

That's my story of the "NEW CAR BLUES"

Sorry buddy and I have to say it, another reason to buy a Camaro.....but I'm sure it's safe to say that you'll have this issue figured out in no time and off to the race track to break in that new motor.

Calverts customer service is great :thumb:

Good luck.

Hey Jason,
it's the Nova vs Camaro thing so Bruce is just picking at me for being a Nova owner. What it boiles down to is the Camaro's are out number here on D/S and so a rivalry between the two has formed with Nova's in the lead and Camaro's draging behind WAY behind.
It realy doesn't have anything to do with the issue I started post for. It's just Bruce being a Camaro owner.

So...bad idea to use shims then? I also have those springs, if I measured correctly I have nearly 8 degrees. A little much
believe.

It's better to discover this acute angle this way rather than while picking up pieces of a yoke on the track :smt003

you could have made a shim in the mill at any given angle you like. also changes to the shackle length will change the angle

a wedge/pinion angle shim wont change the ride height much , you figure if the back edge is 1/4 thick then its only changing ride height about 1/8 of an inch. I have made lowering blocks with an angle miled into them. I know it doesent matter since you have a side loading issue anyway.
i hope you are putting the houshing in a jig and welding the perches, it willl pull.
BTW you got any pics of your car in its current state, since I opened my shop I havent been on this site due to time and didnt know where you were at on the build til I saw the front end on
