Trying to compare and apple with an orange..

#1 Post by Super73 » Wed Nov 24, 2010 7:36 pm

I am going to be putting a glide in my truck mainly for consistancy reasons. Truck weighed 3,550 last time at the track and went 11.45@118.6 with a 1.59 60'

Since that last outing I have swapped the motor and will be swaping the trans. It had a 347ci ls1 in it but now has a 418 ls based motor. Chassis dyno with no other changes showed:

--------347ci --------- 418ci------
375ftlbs @ 5,600 -- 440ftlbs @5,500 (Locked verter)
449rwhp @ 7,000 -- 521rwhp @ 6,950 (Locked verter)

Old converter flashed to 4,500 wich would equal 360ftlbs (Based on the dyno with a locked verter)
New verter is being made to flash to 5,200 which if it's on that mark should equal 430ftlbs (Based on the dyno with a locked verter)

Obviously the dyno numbers will vary a little due to the new verter being an 8" vs 10.5 and stock 4L80E trans losses vs a freshly built glide.

So my question is, do you think the glide will 60' slower than the old 80E (2.46 first vs 1.76) or will the added TQ make up for it. The truck will most likely weigh close to the same as a cage is going in at the same time.

Thanks in advance

Thats a tough one to call, what is your reag gear ratio, and tire diameter? I think a lot hinges on that.

Man, I dont know how to call this one, taller first gear by quite a bit. But picked up lots of power. Gonna go out on a limb and say roughly the same, maybe a little quicker. will you have enough on the top end to go to a 29 tire and try that?

Can't go to a taller tire as the unit will cause me to run out of gear.. As it is I might have a problem with that..

Did you have a traction problem with the 4l80? If so the glide should help if not hopefully the extra 70 lbft will help. Id say you should be close to the same if everything on paper translates to actually track runs.Even if you pick up 5 mph with the new combo you shouldnt run out of rpm with a 29" tire unless the conv slips a lot. I would keep the taller tire I dont know if a 29" tire is going to help the 60ft over a 30" tire. Only one way to find out.

I think it weighs too much for a powerglide. Not that it won't work but I wouldn't expect it to do anything but maybe be more consistent and possibly slower or no gain at all with the bigger engine. I'd use a three speed tranny and put enough tire on it for it to still be consistent or put it on a serious diet.

or get ya one of these
